I have several cast iron items, but I only use my skillet regularly.  And I use the hell out of it.

Definitely worth having and available for relatively cheap.

I used to have a cast iron skillet, but I don't know what the hell happened to it. You can get along without one, but they are essential for cooking cornbread and that is something I have need of.

I have this 14 inch cast iron from lodge logic. I paid about 20 bucks for it, and it has a permanent place on the stove-top, getting at least one use per day if I'm home. It has gotten so seasoned that it actually adds its own flavor to food, and there are certain things that I can only cook in my own cast iron if I want them to come out just exactly so.  It is important to come up with a seasoning regimen for your cast iron and never let anyone else clean it. I use a mixture of olive and peanut oil and salt, rubbed thin onto the entire inner surface of the thing, which I allow to burn dry on the entire bottom. I never wash it with soap, just a brush and warm water, wipe clean with paper towel. When I'm not expecting company, sometimes I don't wash it at all, just bring it up to temp before I cook in it again, allowing the previous sauce to mix with the oil and burn into the iron surface. It is really smooth and sort of perpetually greasy. hell yeah.

Also, I missed this kimchi convo: the thing in kimchi that fucks with your breath is garlic. Garlic actually gets into your glands and causes a change in your saliva or whatever that makes your breath stink, even if you just swallow it in pill form you will have bad breath. THere is lots of raw garlic in kim chi. You can make your own kim chi using garlic powder instead, and this effect will be reduced. Also, you will have gargantuan quantities of kim chi for cheap.

The main thing to do is to get like 6 big napa cabbages salted all at once. It's some work to make the stuff, but it isn't much more work to make A LOT. So decide how much to make based on how big your tupperware/mason jar collection is.

In case you guys have missed stories about Inev being really Inev:

Yesterday was the big day. I was finally going to ask the girl who keeps touching my arm and making nervous eye contact if she wanted to grab a drink this weekend. I had it all planned out. I showed up to the bar looking spiffy. I felt great. I drank a pleasant number of beers and danced. They were showing a funny movie on the TV and we kept finding excuses to make silly jokes about it. The time had come. We were on the dance floor so I thought we should go somewhere quieter. "Hey, can we talk over there?"
"what?"
"*points* come over there for a second"
"what? Oh, thanks, I drove here, you guys should leave without me."
"just..."
"wait, what?"
"never mind! See you later."

I wasn't going to post this but I am kind of amused by it, in the way I am always amused in a weird ways I humiliate myself. First time in a while I have felt that weird frozen social panic.

All those guys are cooking dinner together tonight, so I am going to make another attempt and try not to psych myself out about it so much. I'm just asking my friend if she wants to hang out.

Re: Reading Undone Man on a Nook!

No. I asked Google and they say there is a way, but you have to hack your nook and I don't want to do that.

That's what I've done, but I'm finding it hard to get started because there are too many distractions on the computer. I like to read while in bed or on the shitter.

My understanding is that the Nook is made for hacking, perhaps more so than any other tablet or e-reader.

One thing I don't love about Twitter is seeing academics I admire being whiny babies. Man. Come on.

And they are so good at explaining theoretically why they are being whiny babies. The whole left-wing politics thing is weird because at some point people lose sight of the fact that things like "solidarity" or "privilege" or "appropriation" are theories. They are ideas about the world. They are not physics or laws. You can disagree with them or their application. Come on. Even really smart people, who mostly agree with you, can disagree with your understanding of one of those concepts. This should not be that hard to understand.

If you don't have those skills, or just don't want to risk bricking your tablet

It's not worth it to me right now to try that. Don't worry LFM I'll read your book. But if you write another one could you make it available across all platforms?

The only twitter I read is Smets puns, but I read those on Facebook so I'm not sure it counts.

Pedro and I went wild in the bedroom tonight -- we pulled up all the carpet to expose the original hardwood underneath.

I am not speaking metaphorically here. We literally decided to do a spur-of-the-moment home improvement project, kind of out of nowhere. Good times.
