Not exactly Miami (http://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&q=Huntington,+UT)
Ok, here's the deal. Remember when I said I wasn't going to Miami, but I was instead going to stay in Houston. It appears that was a bit premature on my part. No, I've been reassigned to smack dab in the middle of nowhere (http://www.city-data.com/city/Huntington-Utah.html). I just got the news today and I have been trying to put a good spin on this, but I ain't having much luck.
Most frightening statistic, population 2,131 (2000 census), Mormon Churches 4 (http://www.emerycounty.com/towns/huntington.htm)
They do have Jackie Wilson as their mayor so that's a plus.
~Paul
-
Dude, go to Miami instead.
-
Holy CRAP!
I thought I lived in the middle of nowhere.
Paul, I think you should look at this as a mission. You have been sent to bring the FUNK to the people of Huntington Utah (and its environs). You can do some good there. They need the spirit of the moustache.
These things happen for a reason.
-
Um, it won't be far to Burning Man...
There are some hella cool National Parks nearby...
You won't have to worry about overcrowding...
You could live like HI and Ed McDonnough...
Or Napoleon Dynamite
-
National parks, man. National parks.
Alternately, Nevada.
Alternately alternately, can you go back to the Miami thing?
-
The one constant is change - what strikes me is, you know a lot of weird and funky people in Houston. I don't know how crazy you can get in a town with four LDS churches. I would have to think pretty hard about permanently moving there, but maybe you can store your stuff (like you were going to for Miami) and just take your bedroll and your one-hitter out there and see what the landscape looks like.
Me - I've got kids. I can't do that shit anymore - I envy you that can.
-
I've lived in Utah on and off for 8 years, and I've never heard of Huntington. It's over 3 (according to Google Maps, so you can probably shave about 1/2 hour from that) hours from Salt Lake, and it looks like you are about the same distance from Vegas than I am!
Watch out for the polygamists. I'm serious when I say this.
-
I only stayed in Utah for like a month when I was doing contracting work. I would describe it as "fuck*ng Gorgeous, but full of creepy mormons."
I wish you luck good sir.
-
I am so, so sorry. Seriously though, is Miami still on the table?
I just think that you're too big for Huntington - what would we get? Pictures of you at LDS church (which they wouldn't let you into anyway)? I don't think so. It's time to RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and go to MIAMI or SOMEWHERE ELSE!
Or so I think.
-
So what you're saying is that we won't be getting any more pictures of female punk santas in giraffenets.
-
So what you're saying is that we won't be getting any more pictures of female punk santas in giraffenets.
Oh NO.
Miami, Paul. Surely they'd be thrilled to hear you'd changed your mind?
-
Paul and Mormons.
I love it!
It's "Footloose Part II."
No, really though - for the love of god, go to Miami, as long as it's not Miami, Manitoba (http://www.cici.mb.ca/miami/), where my SO is from, population 400+. Then again, if you move to Miami, MB we can party. But there are no jobs in Miami, MB. None.
When it comes to Miami, FL, when my SO says he's from Miami, people get all excited, then he adds "Manitoba" and they're all disapointed. So go, people here thing it's sooo cool.
-
What the hell kind of work do you do that someone is needed in a place like that?
-
Do they even have the Internet in a place like that?
-
It's probably beautiful there.
And Vegas, as already mentioned, is an easy drive.
Assuming you can get real internet and UPS, nothing will be out of your reach.
You can probably find enough bored people to go make dozens of cars spit fire.
It isn't in goddamn Florida.
Of course, I spent part of last week in Eclectic, AL (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Eclectic,+AL), and totally peeled out as soon as I could...
-
And Vegas, as already mentioned, is an easy drive.
It's actually probably 6 or 7 hours away, so if you're going for Vegas, don't go.
-
Weird. It's only about 50 more miles to vegas from there than it is from where I am, but Google estimates two more hours to drive it.
Does Utah have a slowificator? Or maybe a moseytron?
-
Does Utah have a slowificator? Or maybe a moseytron?
GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE!
-
Not exactly Miami (http://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&q=Huntington,+UT)
this one time for some reason i decided to help this girl i had been meeting every friday night
for coffee that i knew from community college move from TN to Salt Lake City. I ended up
taking a bus from Salt Lake to Sacremento to visit California and some weird people i knew
from the internet, so the drive to Salt Lake with a girl who apparently never understood that
i was attempting to date wasn't as sad as it could otherwise have been.
Other than the car breaking down on the giant uphill-curving-to-the-right section of the
interstate directly outside of denver, i will always remember burning the crap out of my
arm as i drove the car in the midday sun in that eastern part of Utah.
It was breathtakingly beautiful, that section of Interstate scenery that would appear to be
to the South of where you are headed.
So, enjoy the view. It's gorgeous.
And, the whole elevation thing apparently is real, so use sunscreen.

-
Mormons are Fat (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060214/ap_on_he_me/mormons_heavier).
~Paul
Of course they are, they've got like 10 wives cooking them dinner every night.
Sorry!
-
Utah has the highest per capita consumption of marshmallows of any state in the US.
Can't drink, can't have caffeine, can't do much else that's fun... might as well eat.
-
I remember reading in Time or something a few years ago that Mormons have a higher average income than other religions. (Probably true as long as you don't count Scientologists)
-
It was probably from a mormon.
Not that it necessarily wasn't true, mormons just like to tout this kind of stuff.
-
Oh, necessarily.
They like to tell you that stuff, but if the Mormon population of my hometown is indicative of the overall state of the LDS church, they're just as enthusiastic about their faith as your average Catholic. (Just with less guilt)
-
They are pretty enthusiastic about it here. Probably because we have a BYU out here.
I was listening on the radio to an interview about a book written by an ex-bishop of the LDS Church who has written a book which basically accuses the religion of being a hoax due to scientific proof that a bunch of the foundational beliefs (i.e. that Polynesians and Native Americans are the remnants of a tribe of Israel) simply aren't true.
It makes their version of baby Jesus cry.
-
Sorry to bore you guys with this, but you'll have to bear with me. I'm kinda looking to the past right now, but i'll be looking forward soon. I leave for Utah tomorrow morning. My bags are packed and I am ready to go. All of my goodbyes have been said, and it's just a matter of a few hours before I head out.
Continuing what I started here (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2513.msg55630.html#msg55630). No disection of my past would be complete unless it includes this guy (http://www.paulmcrae.com/images/Miscellany/Misc/INSTRUMENTS/PAUL_GERALD_BOUQUET-CIRCA1985.jpg). That's my good freind Gerald. I've known Gerald since I was about 7 years old. He is responsible for turning me on to comic books, marijuana, beer, etc., etc. We've even been in jail together. He's the only friend from my drug and drink days that I still am in contact with. He's still a heavy drinker though and it's starting to take it's toll on him. Sometimes he'll call me when he's had a few too many and I won't understand a thing he's saying. When he's fucked up he starts to sound a lot like Dale Gribble. I haven't talked to him in a while however, in fact he doesn't know i'm moving away. I think i'll give him a call tomorrow. Also in the picture is Shelly, a girl I lived with for a brief period (http://www.paulmcrae.com/images/Miscellany/Misc/INSTRUMENTS/PAUL_SHELLY_COLLAGE CIRCA1986.jpg). I didn't love her, I was just wasting time, but I was lonely and she was pretty good company. In the first picture you'll see she's got her arm around another man. That's Steve, the guy she eventually married. She was with him before me, but they split up and that's where I came in. Apparently she was just wasting her time with me too because she left me to go back with him and they moved to New York together. There's one other i'd like to show you, Cricket, but i'll be damned if I can find a picture of her. I know i've got some somewhere, but I can't locate them. I was stupid in love with her, but she couldn't be true to save her life. There's also Beth, but I just realized the scanner is already put away. That relationship had the longest build up, but then was over almost as soon as it started. I suppose I should mention Lesley (http://www.paulmcrae.com/images/Miscellany/Misc/DSCN0242-E-800.jpg) who I actually spent the longest amount of time with, but that was not so long ago in the past so i'm not feeling quite nostalgic about her just yet. There is one last one, my friend Kelly from Seattle (http://www.paulmcrae.com/FEATURES/PARADE_2005/IMAGES/BALL/1024/DSCN4767-E-1024.jpg), but that's a story yet to be written.
~Paul
-
Bon voyage and godspeed, Paul. May you continue to meet and padoodle interesting women and men on your many adventures.
-
What have we learned today, kids?
Paul gets hell of women.
-
I was stupid in love with her, but she couldn't be true to save her life.
Oh, this is the saddest thing.
-
What have we learned today, kids?
Paul gets hell of women.
Two words Tick: Chick. Magnet.
-
First of all: Paul, don't worry about boring us. I particularly have no room to talk given how monotone I've been about the grad-school thing lately, but even without that -- you're one of us, making a big life change. You're allowed.
(Besides, you'll post pictures of flaming cars and rats again soon enough. This too shall pass.)
May you meet interesting people and a nice lady in Utah. Godspeed, and safe travels.
-
May your travels be speedy and may Utah be less crappy than it sounds my friend.
-
Paul, I sense a certain tone of momentousness and finality in this post. Obviously you are concerned about your move, as well you should be. I wish you the best because I think the world of you. I'm certain you'll do fine in Utah. I'm certain you'd do fine anywhere. You're that kind of guy.
If I'm misreading the situation, I apologize. But it seems like you're pretty worried about making this move.
Now, please accept this in the spirit it's written -- to comfort your concern, not to belittle it.
You are moving, not dying. It is hard to be away from home, friends and family. It's hard to pull up stakes and start again someplace new.
But flights are cheap and so is long-distance. Of course it's not the same. Nothing is the same as being with the people you love in the places you love. But the relationship doesn't change because you're not physically present as often. You'll always love the people you love and they'll always love you, even if you can't hug them as often as you want.
Plus, I'm positive you'll find some interesting people to take pictures of in Utah. And if Utah doesn't work out, you can go home.
Good luck. I'll be thinking about you.
-
May the splendor of your mustache spontaneously remove the clothing of the most tight-thighed Mormon chicks, Paul. And remember, they're into bigamy so they won't mind if you bring the shaft to more than one of them... at a time!
-
Okay, so I took to the net to get an idea of what there is to to in Huntington Utah, and to my dismay the first website I went to only suggested visiting for local Reservoir for picknicking...
But then I started looking a little deeper, and I found this site (http://www.ut-dir.com/huntington.htm), and I've got it all mapped out:
Deroche Dance Studio
240 South 300 West, Huntington, UT 84528
Tel: (435) 687-9844
Paul will take Jazz dance, then romance his instructor.
T & G Bronzing
365 West 300 South, Huntington, UT 84528
Tel: (435) 687-5142
Paul have you ever wanted get your Original Whopper of Manhood bronzed? It's a good opportunity.
De'ja'vu
735 North 400 East, Huntington, UT 84528
Tel: (435) 687-5200
My prediction is that Paul will basically have to eat here at some point - it's listed in at least three catagories of the directory. He will look down at the menu and it will look like every menu at every small town diner, and he will have a moment of de'ja'vu, and order a burger and fries.
Critter Country Fixin’s
435-381-5594
Castle Dale, Utah
This is listed as one of the restaurant options near to Huntington, and really, I think we need Paul to eat there and report back to us. It has a name that terrifies me.
Alcoholics Anonymous
, Huntington, UT 84528
Tel: (435) 687-9948
Now's your chance to develop a serious drinking problem. Just be thankful you're not moving to Bull Frog, which is aparently near by, and lists "Defiance House Lodge" as the only local listing for restaurant, hotel and motel. Defiance. Is that the sort of attitude you want to meet with when you just want to have a quick bite and rest your weary head?
I just hope you don't get sick and go to the San Juan Health Services District - Blanding Clinic
in Monticello, UT. It's a Clinic for Blanding people. Don't get Blanded. It's probably sort of like the Stepford Wives, so watch out! You'll go in with a case of the sniffles and come out with the curls of your mustache removed and a blank look in your eyes.
Also, I found these weird stats:
Races in Huntington:
White Non-Hispanic (85.4%)
Hispanic (12.4%)
Other race (5.0%)
Two or more races (1.7%)
American Indian (1.1%)
(Total can be greater than 100% because Hispanics could be counted in other races)
Ancestries: English (26.1%), Danish (13.1%), German (9.4%), United States (7.4%), Irish (5.1%), Italian (3.7%).
-
Wow, you stalked an ENTIRE CITY on the internet!
Full marks!
-
Just be thankful you're not moving to Bull Frog, which is aparently near by,
There is a whole town called Bull Frog? Do they have a tshirt, mugs and commemorative snow globes by any chance?
-

In Norway there is a town called Hell. In one store there, they sold these cigarette lighters that said "I've been in HELL". That cigarette lighter was the coolest thing in existence when I was 13 or so.
Little did I know then that 20-some years later I would be reading an electronic comic, if you will, about two cats called Roast Beef and Ray that go to hell.
Sorry to interrupt, carry on.
-
So wait, Tangle, have you been to Hell, or just seen souvenirs from Hell?
-
There is also a Hell, Michigan which is more convenient to us North America people. They have an interesting Halloween observance.
-
So wait, Tangle, have you been to Hell, or just seen souvenirs from Hell?
Sorry to be so vague. I've actually been to Hell, and have (or at least had) the lighter to prove it.
Also in a desk drawer or box somewhere there is a photo of a pre-teen Tangle, standing beneath a road sign that says HELL 6 or something, giving the horns and trying to look metal (and failing miserably).
Oh, memories. :'(

Hello people. I'm home.
Moving to Huntington (actually i'm working in Huntington, but i'll be living in Price) is a lot like getting an injection from a nurse. It seems terrifying at first, but it's never as bad as you imagine it to be. I've been here for a day and I haven't really done much. Went looking for a place to stay, but not many people were home on a Saturday afternoon. Had great weather all the way up. It's been very pleasant here as well.
Here's a brief picture essay of my travels:

Good God, that gorge looks fantastic. Why is British geography so crap compared to everywhere else? They have gorges in America. They have gorges in France, for chris'sake.

You miss the most important point. Paul's arms span the gorge.
-
Why is British geography so crap compared to everywhere else?
Mr Stevens begs to differ, sir.
-
I've been meaning to ask this for a long time.
Most of these pictures, you are in. Who is taking them? Who was with you at the gorge, for instance?
-
Also, welcome to Utah, Paul!

If you're ever up this way pm me and I'll buy you a beer.

OMINOUS!

Paul, that photo of you standing over the gorge somehow makes me fear for my own life, as well as yours!
I am so very afraid of heights.

Paul, that photo of you standing over the gorge somehow makes me fear for my own life, as well as yours!
I only wish that I were wearing my headphones. I'm livin' on the edge baby.
~Paul

I am so very afraid of heights.
I was expressing the same concern, Hobot. I don't think there's any way I could have gotten that close to the gorge's edge, especially facing the other direction. I am a total wuss. For me, it's not so much heights as is falling. I can go to the 35th story of a building okay, and I love the window seat on the airplane. But I can't climb an 8 foot ladder unless I'm able to hold onto something sturdy.

It's heights and falling, for me. Oftentimes, as I am drifting off to sleep, I get the sensation that I am suddenly falling from a great height, and I violently twitch myself awake. This is also accompanied by a sharp intake of air and a shriek.

That's quite common, isn't it? Especially after having had a stressful day (either physically or mentally). Something about your muscles relaxing when you're falling asleep, causing the sensation of actually falling.
Of course, I might be also talking complete nonsense. In which case sorry. But yeah, I've had that too.

I believe you are right. Something like that anyways. I, too, have experienced this falling sensation numerous times. And while I'm not scared of heights or falling or whatnot, it scares me every time! DAMN YOU FALLING SENSATION!
-
I had always heard that it was a flashback to doctors dropping you a few inches and then catching you as a reflex check or something. Then again, the last time I discussed this phenomenon, I was about 9, so I didn't have access to all the medical research available.
-
Or maybe just a flash back to the last time you fell? The time you fell when you were tripping...on acid?
-
Now for my daily dose of validation from strangers...
This is for you Side Show:

The sign says De Ja Vu (http://www.paulmcrae.com/FEATURES/LIFE_IN_UTAH/IMAGES/1024/DSCN11360-E-1024.jpg), but the menu says Granny's Grub (http://www.paulmcrae.com/FEATURES/LIFE_IN_UTAH/IMAGES/1024/DSCN11363-E-1024.jpg). That's my 'Wow, De Ja Vu, this looks just like every menu in every small town diner' expression. So anyway, I got the Burger and Fries (http://www.paulmcrae.com/FEATURES/LIFE_IN_UTAH/IMAGES/1024/DSCN11364-E-1024.jpg) per Melanie's instruction.

I happened to pull my copy of Eat Your Way Across the USA out today, so I thought I'd look up joints in Utah. Looks like the closest one to you is 90 minutes away. Goddammit Utah is too big.
Nonetheless, I think you should eat at Mom's (http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=70).

Eat there and make sure to tell them, I don't know what the HELL that thing is in the foreground but sure as shit ain't no scone.
That is a scone that played in radioactive waste and became mutant; the most terrifying of breakfasts!
-
I think by "scone" they mean "naan" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naan).
-
The article compared it to a sopapilla (basically a Mexican donut) which is very popular in New Mexico, and they pour honey over it like the sopapilla. But it's bigger than any sopapilla i've ever seen. It looks more like a Yorkshire Pudding than a Scone. A scone is more like what I would call a drop biscuit.
~Paul
-
education
Actually sopapillas are rather easy to make in the home. Buy some tortilla you find desirable (preferrably not one with an image of Hobot on it mind you, you'd need to save that one.) Heat up some canola oil in a shallow pan and fast fry each side. Top with honey and cinnamon. Voila.
-
That "scone" looks a lot like fry bread (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2398.msg52219.html#msg52219), which is reasonably common in Utah (supposedly of Navajo origin). It fact, fired "scones" are not all that uncommon in the area. Hell, now I kinda miss Sconecutter (http://www.sconecutter.com/).
Hopefully Utah's treating you well, Paul.

I think they are more or less the same.
Anyway, I had forgotten that scones are something different outside of Utah.
-
My brain must have been as fried as that pastry yesterday, because I absolutely swear that sjlimmer's post was not there when I wrote mine fifteen minutes later. But the computer does not lie, of course.
I really want to know how that came to be called a scone in Utah. It has almost nothing in common with scones except perhaps that it is made of flour. Very fascinating.
-
The linguist in you still lives, Wombat.
-
No, no, no, it's some kind of inner culinary anthropologist, I swear.
-
No, no, no, it's some kind of inner culinary anthropologist, I swear.
Surely you aren't claiming that you are a nutrional anthropologist.

Ah, if only!
-
I think they are more or less the same.
Anyway, I had forgotten that scones are something different outside of Utah.
I think it would be more proper to say scones are something different inside of Utah - because they are prety much the same everywhere else I've been, which includes the UK, which, I think, would at least get a scone right (although the rest of Englands 'national cuisine' pretty much blew in my opinion. (No offense, Slink)
-
I think the way I phrased it means pretty much the same thing. I certainly wasn't saying that Utahns invented the thing, only that outside of Utah, it's not a piece of fried dough.
-
A scone, is of course, of Irish origin, from the Gaeilge word meaning "hard dense flavourless hunk of bread that tastes like what you'd imagine a baby from the loins of sand and dried toothpaste would taste like."
-
Sand and dried toothpaste have loins? The things you learn on the Internet!
-
AGHHH
I've been ignoring this thread because I, for some reason, assumed it would only be about Utah...
OH my LORD you people have to try Real sopaipillas. The Chilean kind. My grandmother on my mom's side makes them, and holy hell are they delicious. they're like...
hm.
there is a wikipedia entry that explains the difference here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sopaipilla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sopapilla)
I tried to copy and paste, and for some reason it won't let me.
I don't know about the validity of this, though... the way my grandmother makes them, they're about 1/3 of an inch thick, and 3 inches across. not really tortilla-like at all. we eat them with cheese and ham like little sandwiches, but that's probably inauthentic.
-

*COUGH* scottish *ahem*
You're right about the definition though, regardless of how I can enjoy a scone at times. I think the main thing is that the scone reacts adversely when it meets saliva, which proves to be somewhat of a problem unless you're a very old Scots woman.
-
I'll get into the whole Utah thing later, but Paul, if you ever get out my way (PDX, OR) we'll hook up for beverages and some sort of show. Hell, that's true for any of you, but especially Paul.
And Wombat.
-
And Wombat.
Same to you if you ever come in the other direction. Beverages and, um, if I say something like "I'll show you my snakes if you show me your tattoos," blame it on MisterQueue. He has been a terrible, terrible influence in your absence.
-

Don't blame me if I'm a Sick Fuck. I was made that way by my creator. Which of course means Dr. Digistein at Cybernectic Inc. Shoutouts to all my Cyborgies out in West Berlin. WORD UP MY DROOGS!
-
Same to you if you ever come in the other direction.
Is this where I'm supposed to say that I come in all directions?

Thank you Nabu. I thought you were in the farthest reaches of civilization, stuck in some piece of frozen tundra somewhere. But you are in Portland now? I don't know if i'll be coming that way, but I would love to meet you, especially if Wombat is going to be there.
~Paul
-
Is this where I'm supposed to say that I come in all directions?
OK, obviously you haven't trained me well enough yet Q, I completely didn't realize that I had left myself wide open to that.
-
OK, obviously you haven't trained me well enough yet Q, I completely didn't realize that I had left myself wide open to that.
I am not about to train you that well. For one, my whip is broken. For two, where's the fun if you cease to be appalled/shocked/tittilated. For three, SOMETIMES THINGS ARE GOOD WHEN THEY ARE WIDE OPEN.
-
For two, where's the fun if you cease to be appalled/shocked/tittilated. .
Don't worry Mister Q for you I will try to never completely lose my delicate sensibilities. (http://www.marriedtothesea.com/030306/gracious.jpg)
But can I still give Nabu tiny cans for the picture of his nipple ring?
-
I thought you were in the farthest reaches of civilization, stuck in some piece of frozen tundra somewhere. But you are in Portland now?
~Paul
I'm in PDX for two weeks, and then stuck in some frozen tundra (not Lambeau Field) for two weeks. Oftentimes I see poor aged eskimos floating by on their ice floes as their families happily wave to them and tell them they are going to a better place.
They never believe it.
-
So Paul, I'm still wondering, is this your permanent place to be or do you have a dream about living somewhere with people and working somewhere that looks less like Mordor?
-
Q, I'm just glad I'm not the resident sick fuck around here anymore.
-
You see there everyone, Jough confirms that I provide a valuable service.*
* And if anyone wants to experience that service then meet me down at the docks; WITHOUT #####.
-
That's not what I got from Jough's statement at all, but I guess everyone needs external validation sometimes.
-
If you can't be proud of being a Sick Fuck, what can you be proud of these days?
-
Oh, I don't know - maybe having some dignity.
By the way, I said to a youngish girl yesterday to have some dignity and she literally did not know what dignity meant. That's just sad.
-
She probably would have known what you meant if you had said hove some dignity. That's how kids talk these days.
-
Much much belated reply to Paul: Thank you for documenting your visit to Deja Vu, but as was noted earlier, those were clearly onion rings on your plate. I said fries! WTF? Oh well, I'm sure you'll be back again some time.
Also, where you work looks like it is the actual cause of cancer. The cause.
-
Also, where you work looks like it is the actual cause of cancer. The cause.
I like to think Paul's sort of my Wondertwin in terms of this, because where I work, we actually produce cancer-causing agents. Anybody for some benzene?

I did order, not fries actually, but something called "English Chips", but they were hell of nasty so I left them out of the picture.
I've seen the "English Chips" on several menus here, must be a Utah thing. I'll have an order of English Chips and a scone please.
Also, where you work looks like it is the actual cause of cancer. The cause.
If it makes you feel any better, our job here to build and install pollution abatement equipment on this plant.
~Paul

I'll have an order of English Chips and a scone please.
Make sure to say "top of the morning to you" and call the server "Guv'nuh" when you order. Doesn't matter if it's a male or a female, it's instant funny!

Well, it doesn't make me feel any better. Am I the only planet-raping screwhead around here?

It's OK Nabu, you're our planet-raping screwhead.

Well look at the way the planet dresses. It wouldn't show off that much water if it didn't want some pollution.

Re: Scones
Folks were here last week and we tried the scones (http://www.paulmcrae.com/images/Miscellany/Misc/DSCN11537-E-1024.jpg). Very much like a sopapilla like I suspected, but not quite exactly. Basically it's a donut.
~Paul

I hope I'm not alone in saying Paul needs to get his hands on a giant inflatable pig and some helium STAT.
Not Alone (http://www.paulmcrae.com/FEATURES/LIFE_IN_UTAH/IMAGES/1024/DSCN11310-E-S-1024.jpg).

So Paul, I'm still wondering, is this your permanent place to be or do you have a dream about living somewhere with people and working somewhere that looks less like Mordor?
Mordor? This place is Paradise (http://www.paulmcrae.com/FEATURES/LIFE_IN_UTAH/IMAGES/1024/DSCN11372-E-1024.jpg). But to answer your question, the job is expected to last until the end of November.

Is that a dead body behind you?
-
Paul you and your lady friend look like you're smiling about a job well done - the job of killing the owner of what apears to be the crumpled dead body just in the back ground. Way to kill'em!
Also, why is there a giant Y in the hills further behind you?
edit- Mr. Q and I are aparently on the same wave length.
-
Is that a dead body behind you?
Yes Q, I figured you would be the first to notice. Actually it's two young people embracing on a blanket.

Sure it is Paul... SUUURE IT IS!
20 g's or Smells calls the coppers. She's already dialed 91, now she just has to dial 1 again when I say so.
-
Also, why is there a giant Y in the hills further behind you?
I'll let Miles explain that.
I'm still trying to figure out the Indian Maiden (http://www.paulmcrae.com/FEATURES/LIFE_IN_UTAH/IMAGES/1024/DSCN11369-E-S-1024.jpg) in the side of the Mountain.
~Paul
~Paul
-
I'll let Miles explain that.
Did you know I lived in Provo or something?
Anyway, because there is a mountain in every backyard in Utah, they put letters on them frequently. Usually to represent a nearby school. The Y is for Brigham Young University, also known as BYU, or, "the Y." You can hike to it, if you'd like. Vandalize it, even.
-
Did you know I lived in Provo or something?
I swear you either posted or pm'd a map and you pointed out where you lived, but I can't find it now. You didn't specify Provo by name, but I knew it was somewhere in the general area south of SLC.
I ain't stalking you I promise.
~Paul
-
Yes, I did post and/or pm a map. I just couldn't remember if I mentioned that I actually lived in Provo for a few years.
What were you doing in Provo, anyway? I have a couple friends there still, but I really try to avoid it at all costs. It's not so much that it's a bad town, really. I just didn't enjoy it. Bad memories, mainly.

If that was paradise there would be an ocean there. And 80% of the flesh would be visible. Trust me, dude, I can talk about paradise unironically.
Mordor was the other picture you posted - that green smokestacked monstrosity of a poison factory you said you worked at.

Yes, but a state of mind more easily maintained in some situations than others.

And Daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg county,
Down by the Green River, where Paradise lay.
"Well I'm sorry, my son, but you're too late in askin'."

My dad is a native of Muhlenburg County, I've spent tons of time there.
The worlds largest shovel was still there at Paradise until just a few years ago. You could see it from the highway. Now all you can see is the power plant.

yay, paul is back!

Arkabee, you really need to do a 'I'm back!' thread.

That's great Paul.
Only your tie should be solid black and you should have an embossed namebadge to be fully authentic.

Seriously, that's good stuff. The problem is, I thought I had everything figured out when you revealed the camera remote - but I'm not sure that explains this one. This one required elaborate staging.

I just saw the That Mustache Feeling episode of The Tick and couldn't help but think of Paul swinging from lamppost to lamppost via his mustache. "Two words [Paul]: Chick. Magnet."

Toon Disney is showing the original cartoons. Mainly at like 11pm or 4 in the morning.

Those would fall into the Sideburns category I would think.
We totally need to make Linnea be our remote correspondent for when the Championships are in Anchorage, Alaska. And we should send Paul to compete and take photos.

I guess my moustache most closely resembles the Dali.
I'd seem most of that before. Here's a Blog (http://usabeard.blogspot.com/).

ok, a modest proposal:
sometime this week, we shall proclaim National Mustache'd Avatar Day
for this day, everyone will find a picture of their favorite mustache'd person, and set this as their avatar. The mustache will be celebrated.
of course, Paul will be our king. We might have to have some kind of limitation on how many people can use a picture of him--perhaps we can have a contest, and the winner gets to use Paul? I'm just throwing these ideas out. It's an exciting time.
-
I have changed my avatar. Now I am represented by a photograph of myself with a false moustache. Also pictured: Diet Pepsi and a tray of fajita meat. I appear to be ponderous and/or contemplative.
-
Perhaps we should all just fire up the ol' Photoshop and draw unconvincing and amusing moustaches on our avatars. Mine would be even creepier!
Oh, and if your avatar already depicts an individual with facial hair, you have one of two options: remove the whiskers, or ridiculously exaggerate them.
-
<----- If Iggy was a psycho. (Heeeey, wait a minute...)
-
Okay, I changed mine too. Solidarity.

I've been using this same avatar ever since AIM added the "buddy icons" feature in '98 and the thought of changing it now frightens me. But if you really want to see him with a moustache (http://www.yoda.arachsys.com/worms/wa/anims/gfx/wtache.gif)...

MAD PHOTOSHOP SKILLZ
(Actually, this took me all of five minutes. The crappier, the better!)
Please note how hard I rock these muttonchops.

Aw jeez isn't my avatar already hairy enough for a girl?

OH MY GOD
so now I realize that I do connect people's avatars with my idea of how they look
and suddenly I am surrounded by hairy guys.

Of course, in a week when we all get bored and change our icons again this thread will make no sense.

Lovely.

Okay, I do not feel so bad. That is not the sort of backstory that you would immediately guess. I mean, not feeling bad aside from that I apparently should have read all the archives by now. I did like the thread ending, nice and to the point.

swinehund, you have redox-ed your way into my heart.
So I working on how evolutionary rates at each site in a protein are affected by general structural factors, and ADH is one of the enzymes I'm working on. I'm all computing the RMS distance between isoforms, trying to consider how differences in substrate or flexibility of binding may complicate things. Blah blah blah. Not too long ago, I could draw the structure of all 20 common amino acids from memory, and push electrons around the TCA cycle quite readily.
Did you know that while writing the description for that picture, I had to pull out the LeO the Lion goes GrrrR (loses electrons = oxidation, gains electrons = reduction) mnemonic from high school to figure out what happened to ethanol? It was not a proud moment.
-
Science Stuff...
Suddenly, I feel dumb. I don't know why...

I wish I had known that mnemonic last semester. I have relied on the dull knowledge that since electrons have a negative charge, gaining one is a loss of positive charge, hence reduction. Yawn.
If it makes you feel better, I pulled out my notes on the subject of fermentation and spent about ten minutes trying to think of a pun, but to no avail. But I'm glad I did scan my notes, because I almost posted "You have oxphos-ed your way into my heart," which would have been embarrassing.
-
Usually I resist this sort of tomfoolery, but I had to join in on the mustache avatar business.

I'm trying to come up with a pun dealing with injecting Wnt1+myc reporter constructs into fertilized zebragiraffe eggs and then immunohistochemically assaying for proliferation and Wnt1 activity, but it just ain't coming. Aside from maybe the wild backfire of the TSA -- for when you want your fluorochemistry to turn out like your last vacation!

Yeah, these things run the risk of being severe in-jokes, even if they're good. I have to admit I didn't even get the TSA bit.
The closest I came to a decent one was when I had a pet rat, and she had attacked a zucchini and left a few little nibbles in it. I called them yum binding sites and thought it was funny. I'm not so sure now.
Hey wait, I've got one. Why did the chicken cross the road? Sexual selection.
I'm having a really hard time here.

hmm.
the inner dork in me is crying. I want to have a good joke to tell! I am jealous!
You're all a bunch of geeks! Who cares about your stupid science anyway! *rushes off in tears*

I've finally cracked and I've applied a beard to my avatar. Looking good, eh? Although the floatingness of it all is creeping me out a bit. What was this thread about again?
-
Yeah, these things run the risk of being severe in-jokes, even if they're good. I have to admit I didn't even get the TSA bit.
That particularly weak "pun" was based on a double meaning of TSA: "Tyramide Signal Amplification," a method by which you improve fluorescent labeling during immunohistochemistry but which actually just makes your embryos these homogenous glowing green wads, and the Transportation Safety Authority, the jerkoffs who randomly search my bag way more than would be truly random.

Man, it's okay. I'm reminded of the time at UCI that I was asked by a drunken postdoc what my favorite enzyme was, and I choked and said "holdases!" Which aren't even enzymes, because I'm an idiot.

I don't get it. I know what a chicken is and a road and I know what sexual selection is. Is the joke that sexual selection is supposed to explain everything?
Dang, this thread sure has wandered a bit.

And people used to think they were extra good at it because they walked really straight and weren't afraid of heights, but it turns out it's just because they have balls the size of casaba melons (metaphorically speaking - large balls might make that job harder, actually)? They're awesome.

They were working on the ground (http://www.paulmcrae.com/FEATURES/HEP/IMAGES/1024/05-03-06/DSCN12218-E-1024.jpg) when I caught up with them, but the structrure (http://www.paulmcrae.com/FEATURES/HEP/IMAGES/1024/05-03-06/DSCN12168-E-1024.jpg) they are erecting is about 80' tall I reckon.
They're really nice guys too.

I don't get it. I know what a chicken is and a road and I know what sexual selection is. Is the joke that sexual selection is supposed to explain everything?
Yes. At least it's often cited to explain anything stupid that has no apparent survival-enhancing value. At least it was during our trips to the zoo. This joke has officially been explained too much.

I have been catching up on the board and waiting, WAITING, for an explanation of all the avatars with moustaches and beards.
At long last. I'm down with it. Or maybe my cow is eating out of a witch's hat. I'm not sure.

The best thing about this is when even scientists take it too far; I recently read "Adam's Curse," a book by the "Seven Daughters of Eve" guy, in which his basic premise was that agression and power were all male sexual-selective traits and that there was a war going on at the gamete level between mitochondria and Y chromosomes. Included in this was an argument, and I swear to God I am not shitting here, that male homosexuality is the result of the mitochondria reprogramming male fetuses along a "female" development track. Also, apparently Gaia is going to kill us all unless we stop this aggression blah blah blah you actually have a doctorate? Holy shit.

Jesus.

Jesus.
If it's any comfort, Nabu, I don't even understand that joke anymore myself. Strenuously topical!

There's the man who says what I thinks!

I no longer live in Utah and you guys are speaking in tongues.
