V suggested it (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2698.msg62281.html#msg62281) and I think it's a capital idea. Whatd'ya say? I started preparing a mix a while back and i've been just waiting for this thread to happen so I could unleash it on you guys.
~Paul
-
Since I've already promised several people an instrumental Zappa disc, I'll probably just try to deliver on that.
-
Tentative theme: "Anxiety and Automatons." I promise there will not be too much weird European metal about fighting 'bots, though, and I'll try to keep the amount of Yoshimi tracks reasonable. Thoughts?
-
So what's the deal with this? Are we sending people music they probably haven't heard, or basically making a decent album whether it's mainstream or otherwise? Either way, sounds like a top notch idea.
-

It's your mixdisc Brother Judy.
~Paul
-
Everyone will hate my album but I am totally in this time.
Totally.
-

My last disc, Something Clever, was basically just whatever I happened to be listening to at the time. My liner notes were just a track list, not even a picture. It's still available for download if anybody's interested. PM if interested (and you have over 100 posts. My bandwidth ain't infinite).
-
i use this post to express my hearty support of the concepts and ideals presented earlier while at the same time acknowledge my own inability to follow through on contributing anything meaningful or worthwhile.
-
I started putting together a mix disc for you people back in the Fall when someone proposed this, so I'm in, of course.
-
Um, how does this work, like, if mine is totally lame do you still send me yours?
-
Um, how does this work, like, if mine is totally lame do you still send me yours?
Well, I got several even after I'd sent mine out, so I'd say your chances are good.
-
I'm seriously at a point where I am all kinds of hung up about music.
I'm mostly frozen in the mid 90s, with a couple points of interest over the last 10 years.
-
I"ll say yes, but let's face it, it's not gonna happen.
So, probably not. But maybe.
-
You folk familiar with this?
http://www.yousendit.com/
Free site that you can upload zipped folders upwards of a gig in size, and they host it for download, up to 25 times, or two weeks, whatever comes first.
I've used it on other forums for this sort of thing before, makes things a lot less messy.
-
I'm in. Hope y'all like alt-country and underground hip hop!
-
Emmoh is clearly a bad internet-stalker. Why would we want to use that site and eliminate the opportunity to collect people's real names and addresses for apparently innocent purposes?
-
Emmoh is clearly a bad internet-stalker. Why would we want to use that site and eliminate the opportunity to collect people's real names and addresses for apparently innocent purposes?
Exactly! And what about the home made artwork and possibly crippling shipping costs? In an age of free, impersonal music over the internet... it's all we have to hang on to.
-
I'm in. Hope y'all like alt-country and underground hip hop!
Yes please!
And yea... I'm kinda with Judy. I think I'd prefer the magic of Sharpie on Silver CDR to electronic delivery. Of course, that time I Tivo'ed BSG for a dude in MN... he never did get the DVD, but then again, I DID just slap postage onto an AOL Tin, and black out the AOL crap.
-
Yeah, I have to say, I like the idea of actual physical CDs being involved. It's cool to have a physical memento of the swap that I don't have to burn myself, and besides, album art!
-
OK, are we really doing this? Because I'm really doing it. Like, right now. And I'm going to cry if no one wants it. I will trade for old mixes from the last time round since I didn't participate.
-
If nothing else I am with you on this womby. Even if I have to send you an entire cd of Tuvan throat singers.
-
But I already HAVE an entire CD of Tuvan throat singers!
-
What about turn of the century jazz and blues? I could do a whole cd of that? Oh the possibilities I am going to unleash about all of your fragile innocent ears!
-
What about turn of the century jazz and blues? I could do a whole cd of that?
That would be frikkkkkin' awesome.

My mix is pretty much finished! What should I do now?

My mix is pretty much finished! What should I do now?
Everyone that wants Judy DS's mixdisc pm him with your address.
Also post a tracklist in this thread.
Thanks Judy, that was quick.
~Paul
-
Our all Zappa mix project never got off the ground, but i'll bet there is a lot of TMBG turn up in these mixes. It's on everyone's mind and everyone wants to prove that their favorite track is the best.
~Paul
-
No TMBG on mine... yet anyway.
Mostly because almost everyone else LIKES THE WRONG ALBUMS!
-
Wait - is there a theme? A deadline? I don't work well freeform, people.
-
There will be a Mono Puff track on mine. Hell, maybe I'll do a whole Mono Puff mix and call it "Why MisterQueue is Wrong and Also a Bad Man."
-
Wait - is there a theme? A deadline? I don't work well freeform, people.
No. Soonish.
-
*lies in wait for V's pm of her address... with Martha the jaw stabbing knife all the while saying vaguely amorphous creepy things.*
"Show me will you.. I'll mix CD you in the side of the..." *grumble grumble*
-

Hey wait, that was gonna be my mix! Now I need a new idea and everything...

I'm still working on mine!

Crap, it was going to be a surprise so I could unleash at one Doctor Demento song on you halfway through the CD. Anyhow, this thing that no-one will want is pretty much a mix of my favourite British music you may or may not have. You will all hate at least some of it, but it's my mix and I can cry if I want to.

Well, there you go. Now all that's needed is your addresses. (I'm 15, and a whole ocean away, so no stalking guaranteed)
-
My SO thinks this is awesome and volunteered to help me out with mine. This has two effects: Firstly, it means that I may actually do one. Secondly, it means that my mix might not completely suck.

I'm excited about this mix, it's very reminicent of Bozack's mix from a couple of years ago. His mix Also included Golden Brown. His also included songs by Pulp, Bowie, The Clash (Well The Mescelaros actually), and the Pogues. That mix is one of my favorite albums.

Ahoy, Gimpson.
Nice Brandon Bird avatar!
I have a litho of "Lazy Sunday Afternoon" hanging up in my living room. It was a gift to my special lady friend for our last anniversary.

Sending multiple packages across the proverbial pond will be expensive for someone living on a farmboy's wages (me) so welcome to:
Judy's ideas for translatlantic postage
1. I send one package with all the CD's in, and one of you kind souls sends the rest out (would that be even more expensive?).
or 2. I make one CD, and you all share it about. (No individuality for anybody, boo to that)
or 3. You all pay! I earn about £400 a year at the very most, guys.
And I can understand if you don't want to pay loads to send a disc to sunny England, so in return any CDs I 'order' will be paid by me postage-wise, unless you are feeling philanthropic, generous and/or awesome. I need your musical education, please consider giving me a scholarship.
-
Well maybe Judy really should use that website Emmoh mentioned instead? After all, it's not like we can make much use of his address for stalking purposes when he lives on the other side of an ocean and all.
-
I agree with this womby. As much as I would love an actual cd from Judy's fine selection, I can certainly see the rationale for using a site of some sort. (Actually if you want I can even host it temporarily on Q.com if need be.)
This does not however disallow Messire Judy from receiving an actual physical disc from me when I finally finalize my own mix of course.
-
Jude, if you got a paypal account or suchlike, I would send you some green (or blue or read, whatever denomination you need) to cover the shipping to my little pile of sand in the Pacific.
-
Okay, I think this covers everything:
I will get the mix up on yousendit or similar (Q, your offering of hosting is very much appreciated) for all you who wish to own it without your wallets being lightened.
For everybody willing to pay postage for the REAL THING I will send you your own CD with cover art, small liner notes, drawn on CD etc. and maybe a secret bonus song or something in return for your generosity. All I need is an address, conveniently revealed to me via this 'PM' people speak of.
You are good people.
-
I am having a busy weekend getting ready for my business trip for the next two weeks but I should have time tomorrow to set you up with an account and a dir on Q.com for the tracks and whatnot Judy. I'll pm you with details unless there's an e-mail addy I should use?

You gonna spend our Yankee Dollars over there or do you have a preferred method for receiving payments?
-
Send the disc to me Judy, i'll distribute it with mine.
It cost the same to send two disc as one.
~Paul
-
That Paul, always with the good ideas!
-
Thanks to the wonderful, talented, and handsome Misterqueue, you can now find my CD mix online, concisely and neatly presented. Notice the ZIP folder option at the bottom if you want the whole package.

Enjoy! And remember to thank Q.
-
Oh you!
Quite welcome. I hope everyone enjoys it as much I as am RIGHT NOW.

*collapses in fit of joy*
first I get to hang out with my adorable baby cousin, and then hobot asks for my mixdisc. This is the day of days.

Judy, does your mix have a name?

Mmmm.. that sounds pretty good for a tentative list... I just ordered the Battles album/ep and had heard quite a bit of it, so yay to that!
I miss my 'Happy Songs' disc.. (it died a few weeks ago; I need to buy a new copy or something)
I think I used that Múm song on a mix once.. Múm makes for good mix material
---
Annnnd... as I made clear in my mix thread, I'm down for another mix trade.
I'll probably get started on the setlist this week!
...I'll send people real copies if they want though lately I've just been posting any mix I do online on my own domain.. I do miss doing cover art.. I even downloaded a program on the mac, so I could work on it here. I don't feel like installing printer software, but I could just upload it to the web then print from the pc... complex, yes, but it'd get done and the program on the mac looks way cooler to do art.. har.

Damn, I am impressed you know of Battles. Which EP did you get?
And yes, Múm is great for mixes; my other favourite songs are "Green Grass of Tunnel" and "K/Half Noise."
Shall I tentatively consider you interested in receiving this tentative mix?
-
Judy, does your mix have a name?
~Paul
Christ, I never really thought of that. It's all British music (that's the poor excuse for a theme), so if you could come up with some suitably witty name lampooning/celebrating this little island, that would do fine.

The Battles EP C/B EP (are there others?) ...annnnd I just got it in the mail today and am about to give it a listen :D (before I had only heard all of C, but not the song Fantasy which was apparently tacked on on the disc..)
..and yes, count me in! :D
I'll trade for whatever my mix ends up being... I don't even have a tentative list yet :|
-
so, hm.
on the one hand, putting it up online is so much easier. And any attempt I make at cover art will be un-spectacular, if not insulting.
however, it's always nice to get a package. And making cover art and track lists and the like would give me something fun to do.
-
OK, having surmounted, with the able assistance of the Technical Staff, the technological hurdles that I insisted on setting up, my mix is now ready.
It is entitled The voices in wombat's head. I am not going to post a track list because I want it to be a Surprise, but I will post the text of the Warning Label, which is as follows:
ADVISORY: Contains Explicit Lyrics, Relatively Good-Natured Male-Bashing, Singing Wombats, and Unabashed Folkiness, possibly all at the same time.
Also I should note that the cover art includes a picture of a naked wombat.
PM me if interested with your address and offer of barter. I will take new mixes or old ones, since I didn't participate last time, and will also entertain proposals for trades for local delicacies such as taro pancake mix, stuffed wombats from your local zoo gift shop, etc.
-
oh my goodness
how awesome would it be if I sent everyone a can of cheerwine?
so awesome. but... not cheap. plus it would get hell of shaken up.
I am working on my mix.
-
I just tried working on a mix, but the volume levels of all my songs are so drastically different that this is not going to work out at all.
If anyone is truely interested in a seriously eccentric soul/stoner/dance/jazz mix, then let me know and I will carry this out, but as of right now I am throwing in the the towel.

This is why god invented mp3gain

I should point out that if my internet stalking skills prove sufficient, some of you are going to get my mix whether you like it or not.
I'm looking at you, August. Don't make me look you up in the Yellow Pages under 'lawyers'! I swear I'll do it!
-
I thought I already asked for one. Oh well. PM'ing my address.
-
Alright, I am finally done now that I am back in town. The theme of this album is "Pirates, Mostly.. Mostly Pirates" because I love palindromes (even if it's just the phrases). I also love pirates.
I poured over this damn thing all morning because I wanted it to be representative, but still something people could listen to more than once. Songs were scrapped as I figured most everyone would skip them after the first listen; so I hope I have succeeded. Things I was successful in saving you folks from: Shanties, Aesop Rock (I didn't know how many people would want hip-hop in the middle of the disc really), Thurl Ravenscroft (Seriously.. you should thank me that A Life on the Ocean Waves didn't make it on here). Anyway, er, here's the tracklist:
QueueMix 101
"Pirates, Mostly.. Mostly Pirates"
1. Mark De Gli Antoni - Los Enfant
2. Adrian Holovaty - Gypsy Jazz Mario
3. Cab Calloway and His Orchestra - St. James Infirmary
4. Tom Waits - Starving in the Belly of a Whale
5. Yoko Kanno - Piano Black
6. Amon Tobin - Verbal Feat. MC Decimal R.
7. Self - Trunk Fulla Amps
8. Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution - Here's to Life
9. Regina Spektor - Sailor Song
10. Peter McConnell - Compañeros
11. Metric - The Twist
12. Pinback - Lyon (Live in San Francisco)
13. Metisse - Boom Boom Ba
14. Kid Koala - Robochacha
15. Peter McConnell - Swanky Maximino
16. Momus - Is It Because I'm a Pirate?
17. Mr. Scruff - Shanty Town
18. Wilmot - Sabres of Paradise
19. Toenut - Mr. Cockly Puppance, Esq.
20. Solex - The Burglars Are Coming!
21. Mice Parade - More Music for Mallets, Voices
22. Peter McConnel - Los Angelitos
23. Cellar Boys - Wailing Blues (Recorded in 1930)
24. The Fiery Furnaces - Benton Harbor Blues Again
25. Mark De Gli Antoni - They Wave
There. So if you want a copy hit me up on the PM front. Word and such.
-
I want a copy!
And, yes, I think it is probably for the best that you did not include that Thurl Ravenscroft song.
-
And, yes, I think it is probably for the best that you did not include that Thurl Ravenscroft song.
These people don't know how close they came to being destroyed I tell you.. THEY DON'T KNOW.
-
I'm kinda disapppointed you didn't include the Thurl Ravenscroft song. Dude just died and all...
-
Yeah, man, I love Thurl Ravenscroft songs. They're great.
-
WELL DAMMIT!
-
I don't know Thurl Ravenscroft, I could have been educated.
~Paul
-
Oh you bastards.
Fine.. for a limited time only. (http://www.misterqueue.com/09%20-%20A%20Life%20On%20The%20Ocean%20Wave%20(Part%20II))%20[Thurl%20Ravenscroft.mp3)
-
I dont' wanna hear that shit! Fuck this... Ravenscroft! Why you gotta pressure us to listen to bands like Thrurlr Ravenscroft (RrR) and Pinback?
-
Pipe down you little shit. I ain't sayin' another word to you till you get through Summer in Abaddon at least once.
-
I don't know Thurl Ravenscroft, I could have been educated.
~Paul
Did you ever watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas? Then you know Thurl Ravenscroft.
The original Grinch that is, not that shitty Jim Carrey thing.
-
Did you ever watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas? Then you know Thurl Ravenscroft.
Oh ok then. Yeah, i've seen the show many times and I have the soundtrack.
Not the shitty Jim Carrey thing.
~Paul
-
Also, he was the voice of Tony the Tiger (hence my earlier comment).
But yes, he sang the songs in How the Grinch Stole Christmas cartoon.
-
He was basically a good guy yes.
So what? No one wants this mix I worked so hard on? You bastards!
(and no, Hobot and the others don't count)
-
Sign me up, Q. I do not recognise a thing from that mix, and that can only be a good thing. If it does not meet my expectations, I can always use the disc as a bird-scarer. Darn you and your eclectic music tastes, all of you.
(There is a good chance my parents will open the package so keep it fairly clean. On the outside, at least. As the doctor said to Hobot.)
-
I'll take one if I gotta.
-
I do.
-
Aug: I am on it.
Jough: Should I just like.. get your addy from womby or threaten you with jaw stabbing. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT ROUTE YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO TAKE WITH THIS?!
-
Q: I just figured you'd be resourceful enough to look it up. It's not like my (mailing) address is a secret.
I'll send you a PM, though, you lazy fuck. And reply with your address if you want one of mine. Actually, that goes for the lot of you.
-
PM'ing now.
Also, where's "The Mariner's Revenge Song?" I mean, it's not technically piratical, but honestly!
-
PM'ing now.
Also, where's "The Mariner's Revenge Song?" I mean, it's not technically piratical, but honestly!
I actually thought about that, but I figured everyone here had heard it. I want to expose myself to you... YOU HEARD ME!
Man.. whine about how no one wants your mix and suddenly it picks up. I am hoping to mail most of these off monday or tuesday.
-
We may have to change Q's nickname to "Sad Fuck."
-
We may have to change Q's nickname to "Sad Fuck."
I'll have you know that when I am fuck*ng.. people would probably describe it more as Sick (in the skater way) than sad (in the emo way)
But you do as you please herr admin.
-
man...
I am so at a loss as to what to put on my mix.
so far it is one track: "Burning House of Love"
do you all know this song?
Will this be like when I asked my dad if he'd ever heard the song "Stairway to Heaven" when I was in 7th grade?
I'm thinking that I'll post the tracklist, and you can tell me if any of the songs are not worth putting on it. My mixes are not a science... so it won't have a theme or anything. It will be "my favorite songs", and maybe I'll switch some out for HoJul's version (since I already sent her a mix for her birthday).
and of course, remember that I am not sending you a message with these songs. "Let's Kiss" by Beat Happening is not a message to anyone. Nor is "get the fuck away I'll cut you Q, I'm serious I told you not to show up here like this" by my future band.
-
I still intend to make a mix, however work is stone cold crazy, and finals are coming up. I'll get to it next week. Please, could all y'all set aside one for me? I'll go through and pm everybody with requests once I'm done going completely insane.
-
Will this be like when I asked my dad if he'd ever heard the song "Stairway to Heaven" when I was in 7th grade?
Aw that is so cute.
Inev, you are missing the spirit of the enterprise. Do not ask for approval. Have the courage of your convictions.
-
Yeah, dude, it's man time, and you got to step correct. Just make your mix and the good lord will provide.
-
I'll get to the PMing..
I've been such a slacker on my mix... all I know is how the beginning will go and it has yet to have a theme.
I may even do another keyboard ditty I make up in the midst of it as an interlude... it has yet to come together though.. and I need my musician friend to master it once I'm done -- he hasn't been around lately.. audacity is good for some editing, but I know nothing about compression and all that jazz.
Soon, yes soon... most likely it'll be as eclectic as my other mixes.
The Books, Orange Juice, The Boy Who Spoke Clouds, The Oranges Band and Birdmonster are some of the bands that shall make it on there... you can PM if you are interested based on that alone...
-
My mix is about half-assembled, but most of all of my days lately have been putting rats in boxes and taking them out again, so I'm not ready yet. Hopefully soon, though.
-
Theres a good Canadian folk song about pirates, well... privateers anyhow.
Written by Stan Rogers, about a Nova Scotian who got messed up when their privateer ship ended up getting blown to bits.
Turns out, Nova Soctians had a large history of privateering against the Colonial ships. They didn't care much for the Colonies raiding their coastal cities. King George didn't much care for the colonies around this time either (The song is set in 1778), and gave a bunch of ships permission to ransack Colonial ships.
From what I understand, privateering was safe(ish). You'd slide on up, yell "Avast!" and take the loot from the other ship. The victims wouldn't put up a fight, since privateers would leave you alive, and your ship afloat.
(The song goes a little differently.)
I can't track down the song, (Not while at work, anyhow) but have some lyrics. (http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/pages/tiBARTPRIV;ttBARTPRIV.html)

Yes yes, I am well well versed in shanties, unfortunately most things in that song are LIES LIES LIES. I am sorry I had to take you to the school in the car of pain on this.
-
Oh, I had no illusions that it was an oral history handed down through song.
It was written in the 70s by a folk singer. The events in the song are historically plausible.
-
Indeed, I apologize for coming off as such as a dick in this case. ( I just re-read this because work intruded and realized I was sound all... dickular... it was not my intention)
Anyway, yes we agree...
So... there's that then.
-
That song is hell of fun to sing in a large unembarrassed group. I like it better than most Stan Rogers songs for that reason. "Lies" does not have the quality of hollering and stomping like Barrett's Privateers.

It does if it's that Violent Femmes song!

Indeed, I apologize for coming off as such as a dick in this case. ( I just re-read this because work intruded and realized I was sound all... dickular... it was not my intention)
I didn't read it as dickish. I took it for SASS.
Also:
I am totally down with the merriment that Ben-San describes.
-
UPDATE: All mixes are burned and should be going out tomorrow (hopefully).
-
"Barrett's Privateers" is one of the best songs to sing in a huge group of unashamed people, yes. It's the Very Favorite Song of a dear friend who has the worst singing voice I've ever heard on a human being, and he will sing it given any opportunity. (He also does an extremely fabulous repetoire of Warren Zevon songs; there's nothing like barrelling down the highway at night while your tone-deaf driver is working his way through "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.")
-
Finalised tracklist for my mix, Music That Won't Let You Down:
1. "SZ2" - Battles

4. "A True Story of a Story of True Love" - The Books
5. "I Slept with Bonhomme at the CBC" - Broken Social Scene
6. "Gunner" - Denali
7. "The Instinct" - Denali

15. "Your Ex Lover Is Dead" - Stars
PM me with your address if you'd like a copy. I'll be burning the mixes and sending them out some time after 15 May.
-
so...
I already have a copy, though.
Is this because you like me the best? I think it might be. This has been my suspicion.
or maybe I'm the focus person. If it's good enough for me, well, it's good enough for anyone. maybe too good!
also: I still have that dang ol' first song stuck in my head.
-
so...
I already have a copy, though.
Oh look hey so do I!
No one likes a braggart.
Not even me!
-
damn, man! you've changed!
you're supposed to say "shut up, you little shit! I have one too!"
and then we all laugh.
nice call, Mr "yeah hobot sounds so cute when she first wakes up."
-
Quiet you little shit.. you're not supposed to point out hypocrisy!
-
man...
with all this talk of little shit, I almost forget that you are the Meconium of the board.
-
nice call, Mr "yeah hobot sounds looks so cute when she first wakes up."
Fixed Sexed that up for you.

You, sir, are creating a hostile internet environment. This patriarchal misogyny will not stand. I will fight you.
-
This patriarchal misogyny will not stand.
Oh yeah. Tell that to God's Own Dick.
-
"yeah hobot sounds tastes so cute when she first wakes up."
For the win.
-
*Cough*
-
*Cough*
Still you have to admit that was a winner. Oh sure, we could go for the cheap Apocalypse Now reference regarding the smell of Hobot in the morning but Jough would still win the thread.
-
OK, ok, this is what I overheard someone saying the other day. it wasn't me, I swear.
nice call, Mr "yeah hobot is so cute when she first wakes up. just like she always is."
I originally had put something quite rude there. And then I had the apology which follows. I did not make the connection that maybe I should not say it, if I immediately felt the need to apologize.
I am sorry.
I have learned today that the things that I say as jokes are not always taken as jokes.
Apparently I made a girl cry?
finally: I am sorry that 'dawg had to read that. sorry.
-
Man, it was cute and good natured until you shit all over it.
Boo to that.
This post is senseless now that the preceding post has been edited, but it served it's purpose. Carry on.

ALL MIX DISCS HAVE BEEN SENT; ALL SOULS DID (WILL) BURN!
Except for Judy's who said his parents may look at it, so I didn't exactly want to put "Judy Is A Dick Slap" on the label... so.. dammit Judy.. pick a moniker and I will put it there.
-
I finally finished my mix. I'll be sending it out by Monday / Tuesday of this coming week, so be prepared!

..and on the cover, I stole a drawing of a boat and made it eery and red, so yeah... if you want in on it and haven't PM-ed yet, do so!
---
And yeah, before anyone asks, I nixed my interlude due to allergies. tons of heavy breathing makes for a bad recording. if I ever get it right, I'll just post it here later.
[ETA: The theme of the mix is summer, by the way... I came to that conclusion after I had two wave songs..]
-
To all: I have received no feedback on my Mix, so I assume it wasn't immensely loved. I will not be sending out any discs (maybe I am just lazy and this is an excuse. I am sorry to any dudes who were interested).
Reminder: www.misterqueue.com/judy (http://www.misterqueue.com/judy) if you need to download any of them or something. Burninated!

Er.. I don't know what happened to that link. Sorry about that. I will get it working once more this weekend.
(P.S. I liked your mix judy.. I did! Don't do it man, your mixes have so much to live for!)
(P.P.S. Did you get mine or did the Royal postal service decide I was a danger to the Queen Mum?)

Q, I thankyou for sacrificing your man-hours and money to keep these online, so give them the axe whenever is needed.
I am glad you liked my mix!
I have not received yours yet. Dark forces are afoot. Maybe they are just shocked that someone is sending something to England.
-
I need to listen to all of my mixes.
and make mine.
I am so bad at remembering to listen to new CD's...
also I need to download Judy's.
-
UPDATE: As of this morning, the mixes have been sent to those who requested a copy and PM-ed me with their address.
-
I don't remember to whom I sent my address, BUT if you want my mix (no track listing as that would ruin it) then PM me with your address and it shall be done.
-
As promised: The Digital Version (http://aekastar.livejournal.com/525747.html) with added commentary!
So yeah, even if you did get a real copy of my mix, if you want to know the meaning I got from my own mix, you can go ahead and look, but if you'd rather not have it ruin your interpretation, don't. ;D
-
My Mixdisc is inching closer to being finished. I'll be making my first test pressing this weekend to see if it flows right.
Jough, did I miss out on your mix? Did I not send you my address? I can't remember.

ok, I am sorry. I am not a smart guy about computers.
mr Del_Vaca, is there some trick to save those songs? or do I just listen to them online?
when I click on them, it just plays them there.
-
Are you using an FTP client of some sort? You should be able to download 'em to your local machine.
-
actually, I think no.
I just tried things until it asked me to type in a username and password.
"ftp://" actually worked! that was basically an internet Hail Mary.
-
So you're just doing this through your browser? Which one?
How are the files presented, as links? Can you right click 'em and pick "Save As?"
-
oh goodness. I tried it in IE now, and it let me just copy and paste the song files. Carry on...
-

Give more details please. How did you do this?
~Paul
-
in Internet Explorer, I went to ftp://bigfool.com
and logged in with the password and such
and it just showed up as folders. as if I was in Windows Explorer. so I copied and pasted them into a file on my computer.
-
Interesting, because when I do that I get a "cannot find server/DNS error."
For those who don't know from FTP clients, I like this one (http://stud.hs-heilbronn.de/~jdebis/leechftp/files/lftp13.zip).
Install it and run it.
File --> Connect.
URL = bigfool.com. User name and password as above. Everything else, leave the default. Click OK.
Left-hand window is your computer. Navigate to where you want to put the files.
Right-hand window: Open "Catie n Goo" (you're welcome to the other stuff there if you want).
Select the whole dang list of files.
Click the button with the red, downward arrow on it.
Zing! Watch it go!
-
Have at it.
I think I may post mine for you folks to download too. I like that idea.
I will however send to those people who have already sent me their addresses, or to anyone who has sent me a mix this year.
I am downloading The Mayor's mix now, on which I have heard only one song previously, so I'm excited. I've never even heard *of* some of these bands/artists before, so I am hoping that I find something new. That is kind of the point of mix discs, no?
-
I downloaded the Zart mix.. I know most those bands but not those songs weirdly.. heh.
Yay to Movietone! they just aren't mentioned often enough.
[ETA: yep, was quite good. I'm a fan of shoegaze/britpop
Speaking of which, around the same time as downloading the mix, I downloaded this (http://charlatantric.livejournal.com/86372.html) which semi-reminded me of shoegaze even if it is listed as post rock.. it's that guitar distortion I guess.. hah]

I'm glad it's having that effect for somebody, because I was worried my mix is all passe. I know starlight won't find anything new there; hell, I think she introduced me to a couple of the artists via her illegal download-filled livejournal.
-
I downloaded another mix you had too, Mr. Mayor. I hope that is okay.
-
Sure, as long as you post later about HOW AWESOME IT IS
-
Where are your other mixes located Mr. Mayor? Also, how do you get Zart's mix? Where is that?
~Paul
-

~Paul
Zart's mix (http://rapidshare.de/files/22453592/PSI-Mix.zip.html). I think you have to sign up with RapidShare to obtain it; maybe other, more computer-savvy people can dispute this, though.
-
Where are your other mixes located Mr. Mayor?
If you go to the FTP site mentioned previously, you can find another mix in a folder called "Centreville QC." That's the 2004 year-end jobby.
-
That's the one I downloaded also, Mr. Mayor, but I haven't had a chance to listen to either of them yet because I need to fill in the ID3 tags so my iPod will know how to play them.
-

You don't. At the bottom there's an button to click to just use the free version of radidshare. Then it'll make you watch a counter go down from 60 to penalize you for using the free version. Once the counter hits zero the actual download link will appear.
-

Righto, but you still have to download it. But I'm lazy about that sort of thing, so this may just be a hassle for me.
-
ugh.. you lazy lazy people. I will host it when I get home. Sheesh.
-
Fix the link to Judy's mix too. I want my free entertainment!
-
You know what, just for that I'm not gonna. You had like 2 months time to download that bad boy. 2 months!
-
RapidShare tells me I've used up all of my free downloads and now I have to pay, even though I never did actually get to download Zart's mix.
Dang. :(
-
ugh.. you lazy lazy people. I will host it when I get home. Sheesh.
Man, I was going to get around to it. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a better way to obtain it. That RapidShare site doesn't exactly look reassuring; all intimidating red text and distracting crap I don't care about.
But hey, if you insist, then by all means.
-
But hey, if you insist, then by all means.
INSIST!
-
I know starlight won't find anything new there; hell, I think she introduced me to a couple of the artists via her illegal download-filled livejournal.
Aw.. hee!
The post I linked above* goes to an even more illegal downloadable livejournal ;D
I hardly post full albums in public lately. someone who did a band's website finding my site put the fear in me!
[edit: above as in my last post on page 10... oops]
I did see some I don't have but have heard of.. I figure later I'll just put the songs I have in order and download the couple I don't have.. lazy right now though.. or more, I have a headache :\
---
As for the other discussion-
I used to find rapidshare intimidating, but once I got it to work okay, it's been decent since I can leave the site once it starts downloading.
The actual download didn't take long either.. I just got my own broadband/router thing hooked up though.. it went at least 130kb/s which is fine by me when I'm browsing websites :D
-
So Q, what's that link again?
-
So Q, what's that link again?
In about 9 minutes Zart's mix should be here (http://www.misterqueue.com/psi-mix.zip).
I don't know how long I'll leave it up because that is a large file. So, grab it while it's hot! (I'll give you guys at least a couple weeks. ALERT TO WOMBY)
-
I'm currently listening to Zart's mix, that Snowpony song sounds quite nifty. And "Hotel Bloedel" scares me a bit.
After reading through this thread, I'm quite tempted to make a mix CD of my own. It will probably have no theme except "these are songs that I like". It may contain excessive amounts of Aquanet, spandex and raised index and pinky fingers. But possibly also Elton John, Stillwater and teh Springsteen.
-
I've made a list of Hawaiian music, old and new which could be interesting to some of you - I haven't tracked down all of it yet (one particularly funny song is out of print) but if anyone's interest in a melange of Hawaiian chant, slack key, hula music, Ja-waiian reggae, Hawaiian Rock, surf music, beach music, and local favorites/legends. Let me know and I'll get off my butt and put it together.

I'm definitely down. This could be an interesting idea too! Everyone bringing a mix from their area, or an area they like. I could definitely put together a pretty comprehensive "Sounds of St. Louis" sort of disc.
Anyway, yes, AD, by all means please.
-

Making a Richmond mix would be an excellent excuse for pumping Denali into your collective eardrums! Count me in on this tentative endeavour.
Oh, and it would also include GWAR. What's not to love?
-
A Philly mix could be interesting. Is it artists that are from Philly only, or can it be things that were recorded in Philly? The latter presents more interesting possibilities.
-

I would leave it up to those to define. I am mostly planning artists FROM STL specifically but a few songs that are resemblant of the City as well (as they have been used or reference the town in some way. And no, no St. Louis Blues or Minute Waltz)
I'm not a stickler for rules here.
-

So help me if there's any Big Fat Groove Factory on there I'll have to do something unpleasant. Like the kind of thing that Q would think of. Mudcat Jones would be acceptable, however.
-

Oh I'm thinking of them now. *titters* Oooh that's a good one... tee hee!
-
I love the idea of a geographically relevant mix disk trade. Mine would include people who left Hawaii for fame and fortune and people who stayed here. Some of it will be somewhat mainstream-sounding pop, some will be possibly painfully local.
Really funny would be sending you all a DVD of local programming. OH MY GOD. That's all I can say (besides the fact that Hawaii Five-O is on 5 days a week here I shit you not.
-
Hawaii Five-O is on 5 days a week here I shit you not.
How often do they show Magnum P.I.?
~Paul
-
man. I don't know of any bands that are from here except some local punk bands.
and the MOST AMAZING EXTANT SKA BAND, Andy and the Jivers. I'm not only saying that because I know them-- they are by far the ska band I listen to the most. Plus, their live shows are awesome.
-
Oh! Oh!
I could put together a mix disc of Finnish bands for you lot. ...except that half of them would be singing in Finnish so you wouldn't understand a word. But maybe i'll do it anyhow. Hmmm.
-

Funny thing, I've only seen Magnum once and that was on TV Land - Hawaii Five-0 is on a local channel.
-

That would be amazing.
I could put together some Flaming Lips and Starlight Mints. I could include my band, a couple of my friends bands, and a bunch of really shit local punk groups, but that wouldn't be that cool.
-
Man, Atlanta's only got crunk or adult contemporary acoustic rock coming up outta here. That stuff don't go together on a CD at all.
All Outkast followed by Sister Hazel followed by Maceo followed by Shawn Mullins...

My problem is that I basically know crap about the famous DC bands. I've heard one Q And Not U song. I've never heard any Fugazi or Eddie From Ohio. And I don't really have any idea what go-go music even is. I have one Deep Dish album. Does that count for anything? Ooo, and Dave Grohl.

An all-inclusive list of bands from Richmond, lifted from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bands_from_Virginia):
Kevin Aviance
Aimee Mann
Ann Beretta
Avail
Carbon Leaf
Count Me Out
Cracker
D'Angelo
DENALI!
Down to Nothing
Engine Down (the band that was one of the reasons Denali broke up, goddamnit)
GWAR
House of Freaks
Jason Mraz
Lamb of God
Pat McGee Band
Race the Sun
Renee Heartfelt
River City High
Scarlet
Skylines
Strike Anywhere
Smoke or Fire
The Gaskets
Tulsa Drone
VCR
And some musicians from a list of famous Richmonders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_famous_Richmonders):
Joey Baron
Pat Benatar
Wes Borland (wow, I had no idea; I'm kind of ashamed)
Bryan Harvey (of House of Freaks; he was murdered on New Years Day this year, along with his wife and young daughters)
Shaquan Lewis
Mark Linkous
David Lowery
Cort, here's a handy source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Washington_D.C.) for you.
-
Maybe I should do bands from suburban PA rather than Philly. I could include Cinderella and The Dead Milkmen. And... um... Live. Oh, and Ween. And Camp Kill Yourself. And... uh... G Love and Special Sauce. And maybe Trent Reznor, although he's from that unfortunate western expanse of the state I think.
If I were to include the city the list could include:
John Coltrane
Hall & Oates
Will Smith
Boyz 2 Men
Schoolly D
Pink
The Hooters
The Bacon Brothers
The Nazz
Patti LaBelle
The Roots
Kevin Eubanks (not that he's known for being a musician)
And of course the American Bandstand supported artists:
Chubby Checker
Frankie Avalon
Bobby Rydell
Bill Haley
The Dovells
-
And maybe Trent Reznor, although he's from that unfortunate western expanse of the state I think.
Jesus, no wonder he's so angsty.

Hey now, Pennsyltucky isn't that bad. It produced Kurt Angle. Well, and Sharon Stone ... and me. OK, I see your point.
-
Most of the Kentucky artists would be Country or Bluegrass. However, we can claim Adrian Belew and the Everley Brothers. Plus, Jimi Hendrix was stationed at Fort Campbell and played the Chitlin' Circuit around the area.

I may be the only one, but I'd take you up on a bluegrass-oriented Kentucky mix. Not so much the country, though.
-
This is basically the best idea for a mixdisc ever. Thank you for the inspiration AD.
I will be working on whipping something up by this weekend.
-
yeah, um. On that link hobot posted? I got nothing. There has been no good band out of North Carolina.
Although, one of the bands listed plays in Charlotte all the time. I think they're a psychobilly band?
-
Aw, c'mon man, you at least have Ben Folds! Also Superchuck, Southern Culture on the Skids, Squirrel Nut Zippers, and my boy Ryan Adams!
Who knew Wikipedia lists musical acts by state? Will wonders never cease?
-
I will be reading this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Lists_of_musicians) for the rest of the day. Seriously, there is a list of band names with date references (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_band_names_with_date_references).
And this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Finnish_bands) is for Tangle.

Goddammit Hobot.. I'm at work.. I have shit to get done.
*click* *click* *click*
(I just spent the last 30 minutes reading about some terribly crappy band from a tiny town just because I drove through it when I moved out west... DAMN YOU OCD!)
Edit: Also - List of band names that contain numbers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_band_names_that_contain_numbers) - WHY? Why am I doing this to myself?
-
I used to make lists like this - all bands titled "The ________". Or "And The" bands, like "K.C. AND THE Sunshine Band" or "Sly AND THE Family Stone".
Yes, I used to have too much free time.
-
man. Ben Folds was not listed, nor was Ryan Adams.
Southern Culture on the Skids? squirrel nut zippers? are these good?
-
And this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Finnish_bands) is for Tangle.
Thanks much! Of course, that list is missing some obscure good stuff that I intend to include :)
(...although, 99.9% of those names are probably hell of obscure to y'all anyway, so... um. did I have a point? dunno.)
I do hope no-one is expecting me to include any HIM. Don't think much of their music, myself. Although I do respect the fact that they've managed to gain some popularity outside Finland (and even in the States, based on the amount of HIM merch that I saw in a Hot Topic a few years back).

If you browse the Marked For Deletion you'll quickly learn how much the regulars there hate people like you. For some reason their 3 biggest pet peeves appear to be vanity pages, definitions, and lists. Although sufficiently geeky lists seem more like to slide through. Such as the List of neologisms on The Simpsons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cromulent).
Tangle, aren't there two bands called HIM? Or is like HIM and h.i.m. or somesuch nonsense?

Such as the List of neologisms on The Simpsons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cromulent).
List-haters will get their due.
P.S. Cort, speaking of vanity pages, there's one missing now... *whistles innocently*

Tangle, aren't there two bands called HIM? Or is like HIM and h.i.m. or somesuch nonsense?
Yeah, kinda. The band I'm talking about, mates of Bam Margera and idols to goth emo girls here and there, is HIM. They were originally called His Infernal Majesty but shortened it to HIM due to accusations of Satanism and so on. Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIM_%28band%29).
There is/was also a New York "dub influenced post-rock group" called HiM. Don't really know anything much about them. Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HiM_%28band%29).
-
Cort: I just made them on my own computer, in Word. I did not post them to someone else's web site (i.e. Wikipedia).
-
Southern Culture on the Skids? squirrel nut zippers? are these good?
I enjoy them -- they are both great live. SCOTS is a wink and a nod at "trailer park" culture, but the music's hella fun. They got a bit of airplay a few years ago with "Camel Walk," but I also really like "Firefly," "House of Bamboo," and "Daddy was a preacher but Mama was a go-go girl." The female vocalist really reminds me of the B-52's.
Squirrel Nut Zippers is a swing band. You probably know the song "Hell" because it was played everywhere, and was used in ads for Dead Like Me. They're really a throwback to '30s style Cab Calloway jazz.
Side note: Squirrel Nut Zippers is responsible for my favorite music festival moment ever. As they were finishing their set, the generator behind their stage literally caught on fire, so they played Hell with no lights, no amplification, and with flames behind them. It was seriously awesome.
-
Oh yeah, I was thinking about a mixdisc featuring music from/around Alabama, but then I realized that I would have not one, but two American Idol winners on it. And that's terrible.
Also, thanks to wikipedia, I know that Taylor Hicks was a year behind me at Auburn, and was probably in classes with my slacker roommate.
Woo.
-
Holy shit, dude. I knew you were younger than me by a little, so when you said that Hicks was a year behind you in college... I couldn't believe that I am older than Taylor fuck*ng Hicks. He looks like he's in his 40s, and not just because of the shitty hair.
Man. I know I look young for my age, but DAMN does TH look awful. The Soul Patrol must be making him age early or something.
-
So as not to let this die, I should be posting my local STL mix by the middle of this week. I expect you Jack Sampsons to put on your face eyes and sit in your body chairs! (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=07022004)
I want to see some mixes dammit. Drop and give me 20... 20 tracks!
-
Alright, this is probably going to seem a load of bollocks but I was thinking of a mix where I put down a song that reminds me of someone on this board, and then a song for someone else etc. Like so:
1. MisterQueue - Psycho Killer
2. TheInevitable - Mr Clean
3. Hobot - Junk Food Junkie (Ironic!) (Also, I will not be using these songs if I do in fact carry this through.)
Is this A) Overly 'friendly'?
B) Pretentious? (This song is so YOU!)
You decide! I'm sure this idea would be better in the hands of an accomplished mix-maker.
-
I don't even want to know what people on this board would assign to me songwise.
Also, Henry Kapono just released an all Hawaiian album that looks incredible. Should make the mixdisc when I get around to making one - new baby sometime in the next 72 hours or so.
-
I don't even want to know what people on this board would assign to me songwise.
Pride and Joy - Stevie Ray Vaughan
EDIT: Maybe not. I am going to put THOUGHT into this.
-
Is this...
- A) Overly 'friendly'?
- B) Pretentious? (This song is so YOU!)
*But I Like it.
What song did you pick out for me?
~Paul
-
What song did you pick out for me?
~Paul
Hold your hosses, mate. I haven't even started it properly yet!
(Basically though I am thinking Highway Star by Deep Purple)
-
A great idea!
Holy crap is this a great idea. But I would be SO AFRAID of pissing someone off with my choice (or by leaving them out if I ran out of space/couldn't think of anything)
Dammit... a local mix and a TOUAMBer mix... is this TOO much?
-
OOH! Or maybe even a mix representing TOUAMBers but without listing which ones so that people have to guess? Or have I taken this meta idea so far into the meta that we need to start staying off the beach?
-
Or maybe even a mix representing TOUAMBers but without listing which ones so that people have to guess?
TOO FAR Q.
But the original idea is very cool.
-
I have to say, I'd like that.
Incidentally, on the local mix, are those of us who are nomads allowed to cheat and make a mix about our unmoored nomadic lifestyles? Because yeah. I'm from nowhere.
-
Man, I'm not sure I want to know what my song will be. It could go either way, you know?
-
(I am thinking Highway Star by Deep Purple)
Fuck Yeah!!!
...she's a killer machine, she's got everything, like a moving mouth, body control and everything
~Paul
-
I have not heard any of these songs. What is the deal.
-
I have to say, I'd like that.
Incidentally, on the local mix, are those of us who are nomads allowed to cheat and make a mix about our unmoored nomadic lifestyles? Because yeah. I'm from nowhere.
Sure V, I will allow said rules bending, but only FOR YOU. Nevah let nobody say I din't do nuffink for you! (I don't... I don't even know why I just wrote like that... I am sorry)
-
new baby sometime in the next 72 hours or so.
Good luck to you and yours, Mr. Dawg!
-
Still on yellow alert babywise...thinking today or tomorrow.
I don't know if I want a mixtape themed on songs matched to TOUAMBers but I think it would be fun for you cool kids who know lots of music to post some lists and have us guess.
As long as it stays in good fun and doesn't get personal.
-
So I should stop looking for songs about eating babies?
Congrats on the new nipper, AD. Do you know if it'll be a boy or girl yet? Do you have a name picked out?
(I am probably revealing my thread-skimming by asking these questions)
-
Hannah Noelani for a girl. On the off chance she's not her, his name is Jack Anthony Kalani
-
Well maybe I'll post my TOUAMBer list for guessing and then have the answers/mix available a couple days later. Of course it will be all in good fun, except for jough's. I'm planning on giving a song from Anal Cunt (http://www.last.fm/music/Anal+Cunt). Oops, did I give it away?!
Good luck with all the baby-ing there AD.
-
Those guys have such a wonderful raft of song titles. Wonderful.
-
Q, I am disappointed in your lack of creativity.
-
Q, I am disappointed in your lack of creativity.
Yeah.. I'm working some lame chuckles these days. I blame the week I've been having. I promise I'll get back up on my game soon.
-
I have posted a mixdisc online for any interested parties. It is 14 audio files and a brief .txt file in an 85MB ZIP file. You're on your own for artwork.
If you feel like downloading it, click here (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=L0DYXYAQ).
I realize that just spoodging a bunch of music onto the web and calling it a mixdisc lacks the romance of burning individual discs, printing out artwork, putting it into envelopes and taking it all to the Post Office. But that's just the kind of "romance" I don't have time for right now. So you'll just have to settle for some music.
-
The music is all that matters, your last mix was a killer. A++. However, artwork or not, the mix needs a name. What is the name of your mix?
~Paul
-
Now that I found megaupload I will be making a mix in the next couple days. What do I go for, stuff most people may not have heard, or a good disc of what I am into recently?
-
It's your mixdisc make it however you feel.
~Paul
-
What is the name of your mix?
~Paul
Call it Sleepwalkin' Southern Capers. Just be sure to open the .txt file so you have the song order; I tried to be careful about the flow.
Now that I found megaupload I will be making a mix in the next couple days. What do I go for, stuff most people may not have heard, or a good disc of what I am into recently?
The tastes are so varied across this board that you can't make "stuff most people may not have heard" a factor. One board member might do a mix of stuff that you'd hear on a Classic Rock station, and another would only include songs recorded by shy Asian macrame enthusiasts on wax cylinders.
Just pick 14 or 15 songs that rock your rod and then try to arrange them so they take you on some kind of weird journey where you start in one place and end up somewhere completely different.
Or do it another way!
-
Thanks for the advice. You will see my disc hopefully by this friday. I may have 2, with 2 different themes.
Limmo: Yours was a pretty good mix. It did go very nicely together, and, unfortunately, stopped me from studying for my African Reprecussions test I have tomorrow. I just hope I can get a disc to flow as well as yours, that was the main point of all of this. Also, you also reminded me that my band will never have a song as good as a Beatles song that would have never been released if the Beatles weren't the most popular band ever. Thanks for crushing the dreams of a person who doesn't want to get a real job.
-
Thanks for crushing the dreams of a person who doesn't want to get a real job.
From the perspective of an almost-40-year-old man, I'm doing you a favor.

I don't doubt it.
Also, It came out totally wrong, but I was trying to say that your keyboard work was pretty awesome to my ears. I just brought this 1968 or 1966 Yamaha Electone (like 2 layered organ-keyboard thing I got from my crazy, speed addicted step grandmother) into my apartment and tried to put it on a few tracks I am working on. Who new that keyboard was so hard? Oh yeah, like everyone. I picked up the bass quick and I am just hoping to make cool filler noises with it by the time I want to actually start giving an album to people. I am always amazed at how I am not able to make decent music right away with instruments after hearing them for so long, but luckily that makes me want to try harder instead of quit (except for with guitar. Fuck guitar.)
-
oh dude, guitar owns me.
except for like half an hour ago. I had this awesome two-chord jam going. there was kind of an E7 thing, and then I'd change it to another kind of E which I don't really know the name of. apparently it's an "E7#9?" And then I'd go down to an A. it sounded pretty awesome, and I had this funky rhythm going, and then I'd do little riffs between the chords, and then I'd sometimes throw in a D or a G....
and then it all kind of fell apart and my rhythm died and I started sucking again.
The worst part is, I know that in reality it sounded horrible. Apparently I have magical ears-- I think what I am playing sounds great, but to the objective listener it sounds like I am flailing at the strings without regard for rhythm or meter. luckily my wonderful angel of an ex-girlfriend told me this, so now I am at least aware of it.
however, I can write some kickass keyboard parts. I am not sure why. the chord progressions I come up with on the keyboard are just insane. However, I can only play chords. any kind of melody reveals that I have only had like 3 months of piano lessons, and that I only play the ivories when my mood is strange.
-
I don't doubt it.

Well, thank you for that. Most of it was actually a Yamaha QR-10 machine, but I'll take whatever praise I can get, especially since I'm mainly a guitarist.
I've been playing in a band for the past eight years, and it's stunning how much work goes into just sounding okay.
-
Yea, me and a couple "bandmates" (friends) have recorded like 8 songs in the past week. We just started playing with each other recently, after we were drunk and fuck*ng around and I started singing this song I wrote a while ago. The guys I am playing with are pretty good but don't write that good of lyrics. I write okay lyrics for someone that rarely does it, but am only passable at bass (just picked it up recently) and guitar (I am actually better at guitar than bass, but I am tone deaf and can keep rhythm well, so yea, I switched). So far it is working okay, but it is so hard (time consuming) to get it all perfect since we are recording live. Like we play 2 verses and a cgorus right, then the harmonica/ guitar player goes off beat during his harmonica solo and you have to start again. Probably not the same problems you have, but it is lame spending like 2 hours trying to get the harder songs perfect once. I mean they are 3 to 6 minute songs, it should not take over an hour to get it right. Not if you want to play live anytime soon, anyway.
-
Ok, my mixdisc is complete.

If you are only gonna listen on your i-pod you'll never use the CD beyond ripping it, so there is no point in having it really, go on and get it now. But those that prefer the mailer that option is available.

Alright, I made my mix disc and got it up on megaupload.com.
Unfortunately, this was the first mix I ever made and it is way too long. 29 songs, separated into two folders, comes in .rar format.
It comes with two pages telling you what is in each disc, and, in windows, if you right click->view->details->then hit the # section in the toolbar or whatever it is called, it will put it in the right order for you.
Live Fast, Die Young; Mozart (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=I6IMLA22)
Song List:
Live Fast, Die Young; Mozart (Disc 1):
01 Woody Guthrie- This Land Is Your Land (Lost Verse)

Sorry, taking 7,000 songs down to 15 is hard. I got a lot of the stuff I am listening to now (Reggae and Redneck Liberal country.folk) in there and some tunes I consider classic for summer (like reggae). Oh yeah, I forgot I put a Bill Hicks sketch in there to. I would take it out, but I already uploaded it. There will be no mailed out discs, sorry I can't afford it at this point. I mispelled thieves or thievery alot too. Damn I before E.
-
Anyone download this?
-
Anyone download this?
I am in the process of doing so. This looks pretty damn good. Will let you know what I think.
-
It keeps timing out on me, man. Fuck that upload site. Fuck it to HELL.
-
Bummer, maybe I can send some hard copies out on Aug 1 if anyone wants one bad enough, have to evaluate the finacial situation.
The first disc is mainly country-folkish, the second is a bit more crazy.
-
Anyone download this?
I did, but I don't know how to use this .rar format.
~Paul
-
I did, but I don't know how to use this .rar format.
~Paul
Download winrar and install it.. It's freeware (mostly)
That will allow you to "unrar" it. It's a lot like zipping, but more efficient.
-
Ok, the next question is what is it called. 'My Mix' just ain't gonna cut it.
~Paul
-
"Keith Hernandez's Home Run Jamboree"? Naw.. I'm only funnin'.
-
Actually, I see that it has a name "Live Fast, Die Young, Mozart," which is a great name.
~Paul
-
The track you have listed as Junior Murvin - Police and Thieves shows the artist to be Lee Scratch Perry. Is Junior Murvin - Police and Thieves the name of the song or is Junior Murvin a pseudonym for Lee Scratch Perry?
~Paul
-
Junior Murvin sang "Police and Thieves." Lee "Scratch" Perry produced it.
-
And it came in the Lee "Scratch" Perry Arkology box set. Sorry for the confusion.
Most of the stuff he produced is more his than the artist that made it, from the way I understand how his productions worked. At very least he was as important as the recording artist.
-
"Keith Hernandez's Home Run Jamboree"?
Now I have to make a new mix soon. Thanks alot.
-
Now I have to make a new mix soon. Thanks alot.
I do what I can good sir!
-
so, I have made my theoretical mix, and it comes out to over 2.5 hours long. so, um. I need to work on it more.
anyway, there are a few songs that I have only included because I think most people might not be familiar with them. however, the reason most of my friends do not know these songs is that most of my friends know shit-all about music. so, tell me if it is rediculous to include:
Wasted-- Black Flag
What do I get? -- The Buzzcocks
There you Are-- Flaming Lips
Viet Nam-- Minutemen
The money will roll right in-- mudhoney
Mr Grieves-- Pixies
Prove my Love-- Violent Femmes
anything by The Replacements (mostly from Let it Be. I picked my favorite tracks, which came out to about half the album. obviously this will be pared down.)
anything by Mission of Burma (same as the 'mats. I picked my favorite tracks, which came out to half of what they ever released)
Minor Threat. Um.
once again, I realize that most of you are older than me, and that most of these groups are from the 80's. so maybe everyone who grew up in the 80's rocked out to "Straight Edge" and I wasn't aware.
-
I am only 2 or 3 years older than you but have at least heard of every one of those bands. Most I have heard as well. Some of those I consider classic tracks and bands.
However, I haven't heard all of those and I included a Replacements track. What I did for mine was I made a mix I will listen to for a couple weeks, and posted it.
I think that is the best way, since it was my first mix.
-
Keith Hernandez is a singles hitter.
~Paul
-
so, I have made my theoretical mix, and it comes out to over 2.5 hours long.
Do a double like keef.
~Paul
-
see, but, I was going to make it For Real and mail it to people. so a single disc would probably be best.
I have now gotten it down to 1:36, though. the issue is that most of the songs are pretty short-- so cutting off an additional 16 minutes is probably going to be 6 or 7 tracks.
plus, I'm seeing if I can get a track by this local ska band. if I can't get a copy from them-- is there any tricky way that I can record a song that I'm streaming? They have the track on their Myspace, but it seems like "hold the microphone up to the speaker!" is a bad option.
-
Okay, because I felt guilty for being way behind on my STL and TOUAMBER mix, I made another quick n' dirty mix. It was supposed to be done last night but I got called into work (which I didn't get back from till 4am and then there were guys using chainsaws on my street.. so the mix is a little lackluster due to me being insane with deprivation.)
Tracklist in a second but a few notes:
- This is a little less accessible mix than "Pirates Mostly... Mostly Pirates"
- There's a couple interludes on the first Disc. I probably put too many, but fuck you.
- I couldn't resist putting Ace Rock on here, so those of you who absolutely hate hip-hop can just skip the 2nd to last track on the 2nd disc.
- Mostly I'm making this one download only but if you really really need (or just want) a physical disc from the Q then lemme know.. I can do this thing if need be.
- As with Keith's it's a RAR and a rather big download. (165 mb! My goodness!) If you are using Mac there should be no problems. If you're using Windows, get WinRAR (it's mostly free) to unrar it. If you're using *nix, why the fuck would you be asking for help with simple decompression?
- I do tend to ramble on a bit. I blame the sleep deprivation mostly.
- Marmosets like cheese.
That's all. It's available here (http://www.misterqueue.com/mix2.rar). Tracklist below. (I promise STL and TOUAMBER mixes available soon)

recieved a mix from mr Paul McRae!
waiting for my parents to say "who is "theinevitable?" who is this Paul person? you met him on the internet!? what!?"
edit: HOLY HELL! 6 discs!
-
Me too. I am a little overwhelmed. How will I listen to six new discs? Damn, why don't I have a CD player in my car? Why am I always behind the times?
-
dude, i am so bad at making mix CDs. I am trying to make smooth transitions.
how do you transition from rockabilly to 1st wave ska? or from 1st wave ska to punk? In theory: 2nd wave ska. but the reality is that these songs do not mesh together.
-
You put another song in between?
-
Me too. I am a little overwhelmed. How will I listen to six new discs? Damn, why don't I have a CD player in my car? Why am I always behind the times?
Me three!
But why "FAP"?
-
But why "FAP"?
The answer to this will frighten us all (http://sexylosers.com/039.html) I'm sure.
-
so.
I have a tentative tracklist. 2 discs, because it was easier to add more songs than it was to cut-- too many songs that I love. but not enough songs to find a "theme." although there are two tracks by local groups on here. I am really sad that I couldn't get the track by the local ska group who I basically am in love with.
Disc 1: Rockabilly, post-punk, punk, ska.
1-- Elvis Presley-- Blue Suede Shoes
2-- Carl Perkins--That's All Right, Mama (almost used the awesome beatles version. but didn't.)
3-- Cake-- Stickshifts and Safety-Belts
4 X-- Burning House of Love (Live)
5 Mr J.R. Cash-- Hey Porter
6 I Ain't got You-- The Yardbirds (transition! semi-effective! really fun guitar solo.)
7 Buzzcocks-- What do I Get?
8 Mission of Burma-- That's when I reach for my Revolver
9 Viet-Nam-- Minutemen
10 Mission of Burma-- Ballad of Johnny Burma
11 Black Flag-- Wasted
12 The Replacements-- I will Dare
13 Mission of Buma-- Peking Spring (live)
14 Too Much Too Soon-- Mr Desmond Dekker
15 Shame and Skandal-- The Skatalites
16 Israelites-- Mr Desmond Dekker (this man has possibly my favorite voice.)
17 Nite Klub-- The Specials
18 Tonight-- The Slackers
19 Hey Baby! (new rising sun)-- Mr Jimi Hendrix
20 Mission of Burma-- Academy Fight Song (wow, doesn't this sound like REM, guitar-wise? Except, you know, older.)
21 Mr Chuck D and the Public Enemy-- Fear of a Black Planet (the title track of their 2nd album. also, the verse which gives the track its name is only said in samples. I love this.)
22 Sonic Youth-- (She's in a) Bad Mood
Disc 2! Jittery spastic rock, twee pop, and crazy loud music. and then some acoustic songs.
1 Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers-- Moanin'
2 Mr Stevie Wonder-- Big Brother
3 The Feelies-- Raised Eyebrows
4 Violent Femmes-- Prove my Love
5 The Feelies-- Fa-C-La
6 The 'mats-- Answering Machine
7 Beat Happening-- Let's Kiss!
8 Heavenly-- C is the Heavenly Option
9 Pixies-- Mr Grieves
10 Sleater-Kinney-- Little Mouth
11 The Talk-- Ammunition for a Love (this CD came out on my birthday, which was also the day I got my first guitar. my ex-girlfriend has smooched at least 2 members of this band.)
12 Elevator Action-- Modern Sickness (Another local band.)
13 Sonic Youth-- Hot Wire my Heart!
14 The Vaselines-- Son of a Gun (playing this song on an acoustic guitar to a baby will make him stop crying.)
15 Sleater-Kinney-- Good Things
16 Beat Happening-- Fortune Cookie Prize
17 The Slackers-- Sarah
18 What I like most about you is your Girlfriend-- The Specials
19 Andre "Ice Cold" 3000 w/ Norah Jones-- Take off your cool
20 The Flaming Lips-- There You Are (this song was recorded on the side of a highway. I love it. listen to the crickets! and the trucks going by!)
and I might add another jazzy song so that Moanin' is not all alone. Possibly: the song which includes the single saddest note ever played, on any instrument.

Will you be mailing or offering them up for download?

10 Sleater-Kinney-- Little Mouth
This is one of the 4 good Sleater-Kinney songs. That's all I'm saying. BLEEP!
-
Hm.
I think I may do a little of both?

I bet you just did a little dance when they broke up recently. You heartless bastard.

Well I have been burning their images in effigy for years, so the dance was mostly that my magic still works rather than true maliciousness really.

OK, Paul posted one disc worth of tracklist above (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2730.msg71972.html#msg71972) but sent six discs. You would think that one would only be grateful for such generosity but... it turns out that it drives me crazy to listen to something and not know what it is. (And before you all ask... no the files do not have informative names.)
-
Six discs? I think it's a crying shame Paul didn't jump the whole proverbial rope and name the first disc 'Hobot'.
-
He didn't but they all do have names. And tracklists, now, so I can listen to them without the interference of my control-freak frustrations.

Apparently I'm just not worthy to have an eponymous DISK ONE OF SIX.

Damn.. way to beat down a dude and his birthday present. I mean.. I'm just sayin' is all.

I was not talking about you. You're still in my favour.

Oh.. "in your favour" huh? Maaan.. stone cold.
I'm going to go buy a tower and live in it all by myself.. and make a device that makes only thunderstorms appear outside it... and play only emo music...
then maybe the suicide? I'm not sure how to poosh it to tha limit there.

It's simple: In a little while from now, if you're not feeling any less sour, you've got to promise yourself to treat yourself and visit a nearby tower where, reaching the top, you'll throw yourself off. What could be easier? You'll even already have the tower in place!

Take V's course and you too can do your best Ophelia impression! Try what I did, only 10K up front!

I suspected that if I sent out six disc it would result in Mister Q's suicide.

so, occaisonally when I'm tired and I take a shower in the morning, the famous scene from Psycho runs through my head and I get all creeped out.
and then I was thinking about Paul stalking me, because my parents were all wierd about me getting a package from someone they didn't know (or rather, I took it before they asked me about it, and pretended I didn't know what they meant when they did ask.)
the result was Paul busting in on me taking a shower (holding a knife), and being like "oh shit dude! sorry!" and smiling that winner's smile of his. then he politely shut the door and left. do you ever have a mental image so perfect that you randomly laugh about it later in the day?
-
I never recieved a mix from The Inevitable. What gives dude?
-
damn. I totally... wow. I forgot all about that. I will definitely make one this time, and send it.

I'm still waiting.
-
Ouch.
I got one from Wombat today!
I will try to cobble something up - I was thinking something with a Pac-NW theme. Anybody want one, PM me.
-
I've still got mine if anyone wants it, I only ever sent Judy a copy.
That said it's a fairly broad sampling of aus rock so don't go bringing any of your 'taste' to the table.
-
damn.
OK, send me your address in a PM if you want a mix. Hold me to this, damnit. I will try to come up with a theme post-haste.
-
Its pretty obvious that Inev should have answered Option 3 in the poll.
-
I'm seropusly going to dial in some NW rock. I will come up with a mix by next week. If you send me your addy, I will send you a disk. I will not hold you to sending me one, but you will probably get some shit here in the threads if you don't send me one. Maybe I will show up at your house.

I am going to be moving soon, anyone doing it digital?

You got this one (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,4154.0.html) already, right?
Still no cover art, sorry. Feedback welcome. (I'm lookin' at you, Paul.)
-
so.
I have a tentative tracklist. 2 discs, because it was easier to add more songs than it was to cut-- too many songs that I love. but not enough songs to find a "theme." although there are two tracks by local groups on here. I am really sad that I couldn't get the track by the local ska group who I basically am in love with.
Disc 1: Rockabilly, post-punk, punk, ska.
1-- Elvis Presley-- Blue Suede Shoes
2-- Carl Perkins--That's All Right, Mama (almost used the awesome beatles version. but didn't.)
3-- Cake-- Stickshifts and Safety-Belts
4 X-- Burning House of Love (Live)
5 Mr J.R. Cash-- Hey Porter
6 I Ain't got You-- The Yardbirds (transition! semi-effective! really fun guitar solo.)
7 Buzzcocks-- What do I Get?
8 Mission of Burma-- That's when I reach for my Revolver
9 Viet-Nam-- Minutemen
10 Mission of Burma-- Ballad of Johnny Burma
11 Black Flag-- Wasted
12 The Replacements-- I will Dare
13 Mission of Buma-- Peking Spring (live)
14 Too Much Too Soon-- Mr Desmond Dekker
15 Shame and Skandal-- The Skatalites
16 Israelites-- Mr Desmond Dekker (this man has possibly my favorite voice.)
17 Nite Klub-- The Specials
18 Tonight-- The Slackers
19 Hey Baby! (new rising sun)-- Mr Jimi Hendrix
20 Mission of Burma-- Academy Fight Song (wow, doesn't this sound like REM, guitar-wise? Except, you know, older.)
21 Mr Chuck D and the Public Enemy-- Fear of a Black Planet (the title track of their 2nd album. also, the verse which gives the track its name is only said in samples. I love this.)
22 Sonic Youth-- (She's in a) Bad Mood
Disc 2! Jittery spastic rock, twee pop, and crazy loud music. and then some acoustic songs.
1 Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers-- Moanin'
2 Mr Stevie Wonder-- Big Brother
3 The Feelies-- Raised Eyebrows
4 Violent Femmes-- Prove my Love
5 The Feelies-- Fa-C-La
6 The 'mats-- Answering Machine
7 Beat Happening-- Let's Kiss!
8 Heavenly-- C is the Heavenly Option
9 Pixies-- Mr Grieves
10 Sleater-Kinney-- Little Mouth
11 The Talk-- Ammunition for a Love (this CD came out on my birthday, which was also the day I got my first guitar. my ex-girlfriend has smooched at least 2 members of this band.)
12 Elevator Action-- Modern Sickness (Another local band.)
13 Sonic Youth-- Hot Wire my Heart!
14 The Vaselines-- Son of a Gun (playing this song on an acoustic guitar to a baby will make him stop crying.)
15 Sleater-Kinney-- Good Things
16 Beat Happening-- Fortune Cookie Prize
17 The Slackers-- Sarah
18 What I like most about you is your Girlfriend-- The Specials
19 Andre "Ice Cold" 3000 w/ Norah Jones-- Take off your cool

and I might add another jazzy song so that Moanin' is not all alone. Possibly: the song which includes the single saddest note ever played, on any instrument.
Whatever happened to this?
-
damn, I am a big jerk.
Also: it is weird how many songs that I LOVED four years ago are not in my top however-many-songs-fit-on-a-mix-CD anymore.
I was going through a big "did you know there are kinds of music that aren't rock music?" thing then.
